How do you get into a new series? The easiest way for me is for it to cameo a character I already love. Even if it is just one issue, I will pick up the next 4 or 5 issues to see if the title is worthy of following. I overheard a guy in my LCS today saying cover art is what makes him add a new series to his montly reading.

cover art almost never has anything to do with contents I've found, and these days the cover artist usually doesn't have anything to do with interior artwork... craziness I tells ya. cameos like you mentioned will sometimes get me hooked i usually read the solicits in advance and if the premise intrigues me I'll pick up the first few issues of a new title (or get hooked and obsessively collect it). I mostly collect specific characters so if they appear in any title I pick it up.

For me its an artificial jumping on issue like the Marvel point one, the DC New 52 or the Marvel Now!. Is that the correct answer according to nitwits running these companies? I used to get the first five issues of a new title to see if I liked the character or the story. But that was years ago when prices made it a little eaiser to do that. Now I stick with Spider-Man, so when his new titles come out, I get them.

Back in the day, I would say it would have been cover art for me too. Something with a great tag line (i.e. Someone Dies! New Costume!). The first black costume cover of Amazing got me reading ASM. I think now it's if I see a creative team I like or good word-of-mouth.

Usually it's a writer that I like. Sometimes I will read something else they've done first and really like it. After that, I'll hunt down other titles they've written. I also check the message boards for people who have similar tastes in comics that I do. If there's a title that keeps coming up that I haven't read, I'll give it a try.

Most of the time it's because the title I was reading and enjoying starts to go downhill. So then I look for something else worthy to read. Or sometimes it's because a particular writer joins the book. Or other times it's because a major event or storyline is happening.

I will pick up a book based on the interior artist. Sometomes I will pick one up based on writer but mostly artist. Though nowadays an artist doesnt stay on a book very long and then you get sucked in and continue with the book even if you dont feel the art is that great.

Like some of you said, usually a character that I already enjoy reading about. When I'm at my LCS, I usually take a peak in most of the titles there anyway. This is how I found The Spider from Dynamite and is one of my favorite non Marvel titles to read.

Like the FF ad in Marvel just isn't doing it for me. No interest at all going by just a pic. A short preview might change my mind.

Easy. The talent. I was dismissing this for years but have accepted it outright: the writer, the artist, the skillset of the team... in that order. Can't think of a time when this approach has ever left me down.

And it works the other way around, too... the best marketable quality about Bendis, Bagley, Liefeld or Milgrom is that they help me, in no small manner, to conserve my energy in flipping open a book whenever I see any of their names stamped on the cover, and to apply that energy in idling past the shelf where it sits.

Several different reasons. certain characters (Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Blade, Dracula) I will buy no matter who the creative team is. A certain talent being on a title will sometimes make me buy the book but not always.If its a character that I just dont like or have zero interest in it doesnt matter if my favorite writer or artist is on the title I wont buy it. Sometimes I'll read a preview, review, or summary that peaks my interest in a title (like Frankenstein Alive and man am I glad I bought that book,it was fantastic) Every once in a great while a cover is enough to get me to try a new title but only if its cheap enough. Also I may pick up a new title if a story arc crosses over into it from a title I read monthly.

When I worked in a comic book store this was one of the truest statements ever. This is why it always baffles me whenever any comic series keeps the villain (Or any character) a secret. Two examples I can give. Years ago when Kazar had a series, by issue 8 sales were pretty low (I think 3?) and they revealed the villain (From issue 1) to be Thanos. On that fact alone, I could've sold 5 more copies a month. Jack Monroe was revealed to be Scourge in Thunderbolts #75. He had been around for 2 years. I like Jack Monroe, I possibly would have purchased the title if I had known. But I didn't know until issue 75, and I didn't want to try and hunt down back issues. But to answer your question. There is no one factor that will make me purchase a comic, but instead it is a mixture of everything people have been listing. Creative team. Do I like them or not? Characters in the book? Do I like them or not? Are there characters I hate in the book? (Not liking a character is not necessarily the same as hating them.) Do I like the concept? Is it a guest star and do I think the combination of the two characters will make it worth buying? (Superman/Batman, Superman racing the Flash. Batman/ Impulse.) I like Peter David, but I have no interest in X-Factor. I like Justice League, but the new series has no characters I find interesting. Avengers Arena. Team superheroes on an island killing one another. Not really something I'd like to read.

A good example, but it also proves a point that Marvel has tried to make with varying levels of success over the years, in that sometimes comic books are about the story. That's why Jim Shooter (EIC at that time) was so abhorred by the suits at Marvel, he had (supposedly) no market timing, in its place he contributed toward some of Marvel's greater artistic successes.
