For whatever reason I have the urge to pick up some back issues of Pre New 52 Action Comics. Any recomendations on an era I should pick up? I picked up issues 800-810 on CCL last week just for kicks.

If you want storytelling variety, the Action Comics Weekly period (#s 601–642; 1988–1989) is pretty nice.

If great writing is your thing, it doesn't get any better than Alan Moore's #583 (Sept. 1986).

If superlative art is what you're looking for, the Curt Swan–Murphy Anderson run (most #s from 393 through 433; 1970–1974) is the high-water mark.

All these statements are subjective; your mileage may vary.
