I don't feel too strongly one way or the other, personally, as Newstand vs. Direct usually doesn't have a big difference.

However there are times when it does, such as the mid-to-late 90s Marvel Deluxe Editions.

And I agree with the sentiment that even though not all collectors care about the difference, that some do. And that "some" should be enough warrant it as a variant. It would make selling to such collectors easier I'd imagine as well as making the software more complete to such collectors.

OK, let's look at it from a different perspective.

So far, everyone that has commented all these years, agrees that the newsstands are variants.

The disagreements are:
1. whether they collect them or not,
2. whether or not they should be added to the DB or not or both.

Is this correct?

If added to the DB, what is the effect of this?

1. it let's those who DO COLLECT them, do so separately:
a. they can value accordingly
b. sell separately
c. the item will build it's own TRUE value as indicated by sales
d. the item will prove it's scarcity or not the same way.
2. Non-collectors (which included collectors who have no idea there is a newsstand variant) will be made aware of all the above.

If left out of the DB, what is the effect of this?
1. No noticeable change from current
a. the NEWSSTAND variants items will continue be sold as Direct Edition variants even though they are not.
b. no way to track individual differences in sales, want lists, demand etc.

And in the case of these and others where the product is actually different (paper quality, cover price, bound in trading cards, additional content) they are already in the database as variants.

It. Is. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Not with the current system we have in place. Get over it. No matter how much you and the 2-3 other people cry and protest and bring this up annually, it will not happen with the current system.

The points you make are valid. Doesn't change the fact it isn't going to happen.

Not everyone, I don't agree.

Agreed, let it go already.

heh, my main reason for wanting them included in the database is so I can specifically NOT buy them...
when I'm digging through funny books at a con or a store and find multiples of something that I'm looking for, the newsies are considered last.

Not everyone, I don't agree.

I don't think they are variants either.

At one point I said I wouldn't mind their inclusion but really I'd prefer some kind of connotation for stores to mark if for no other reason than to avoid them like Xylob.

Ha. Yeah. I saw how I worded that after I posted it, but I was on my phone and it was too much of a pain to fix. Plus, it made me laugh.

The poll was started three years ago, which is when the last activity on this thread was until just the other day.

I think a new poll would garner different results. The majority still won't care, but I think more people have swayed to the side of newsstands in that three years.

But still not enough to make a difference.

As I've said before, I've tried to sell newsstands for a premium, but the market just isn't there. There are still too many dealers that don't distinguish or upcharge for them that it's relatively easy to find newsstand editions at the same price as a direct. Of course, there will always be that ONE issue that a collector has a hard time finding.

I think your right, every year they seem to be easier to sell, and for more money most of time. So if we are smart about collecting what will this look like in 15 or 20 years? I know there will be people saying shoulda coulda woulda, and I will not be one of those people. The indicia's are also a little different too.

Heres food for thought. If a 35 cent variant was distributed in 2 states (Texas, Mass.) that would be almost the same population of Canada. Interesting comparison. Hypnotized

A more recent poll was just done in October HERE.

While there was clearly an increased number of pro-votes, there was also only 60% of the original poll's total voters, so any increase/decrease is a bit hard to compare.
