I bought the Dark Horse issues of Bryan Talbot's Adventures Of Luther Arkwright. Something seems odd to me after reading the first issue.

The letter fonts are quite small and there's a lot of details that seem to be lost from the artwork. Is it possible that this series was originally published in a magazine or over-size format?

It just doesn't seem like this was intended for the standard comic book size.

The Adventures Of Luther Arkwright was originally published in the UK, and conventional British publishing follows the A3/A4/A5 paper sizes as opposed to the US B3/B4/B5 sizes - so it had to be shrunk down to fit the US reprint. The Hearts Of Empire sequel published in the 90's was created for the US format in the first place.

The reduction in printed size of the original really doesn't do it justice though - but I beleive there are plans to reprint the series in a size closer to its original publication size.

I agree that fonts matter!
I think tropical fonts are interesting in design!

Wikipedia notes that the original stories were published by a UK underground comic and then notes the next UK-based publisher was a "standard comic book" so I'd say, yes, the originals were in a different format.
