I am somewhat new to collecting comics and am out of my collecting Golden/Silver age phase. I was wondering what some of the more expensive modern age books are?

The book I currently tracking is the Wolverine #1 Deadpool Variant (selling around $300 on ebay)

Anyone have any new gems?

Modern age books are pretty hard to get a fix on. What's popular today may not be next week. There's a ton of copies floating around because there are more 'collectors' in the modern age as opposed to those who just read Gold/Silver age and then tossed them. Also, the high prices you see on variants tend to be overinflated and drop significantly over time.

I remember when Superman #75 came out, the black bagged version was selling for $70, $80, & $90 within a day of release. Within a couple of weeks it was valued at hundreds. Today, there are 30 for sale on CCL ranging from $20 to as low as $3.

Trying to collect modern age comics by speculating on what will be valuable is a risky game. Only time will tell what is truly collectable (just because Marvel or DC slap the word on a cover doesn't make it so, nor does a variant cover automatically mean higher long term value).
“One of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” ~ Bryant H. McGill

Walking Dead #1 and Chew #1 from Image are two recent comics that spring to mind.

I sold a copy of Walking Dead #1 about a year and half ago for $182. I think it's value has only risen.

I would say that is a long enough sample time to decide that it is a valuable comic.

I also could be wrong, but I think some of the very late Marvel comics G.I. Joes are fairly valuable.

Indeed, Incredible Man #13 from 1969 is worth a ton of money because nobody has it, but Extremely! Awesome! DUDE! #2 with the first appearance of MagnaBabe from 1994 is worth next to nothing because everybody has 3 mint copies bagged and boarded.

I think Y the Last Man #1 is still pretty valuable.

I heard Ultimate Spider-Man #1 has decreased in value.

I just sold a 9.4 CGC copy of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 sketch variant for $345.00 on Amazon.

Chew and Walking Dead were mentioned. I seem to remember the Michael Turner variant issue of Old Man Logan being pretty lucrative.

The key for modern age stuff is to buy the variant stuff that has EXTREMELY low print runs (1,000 or less). That way you can pretty much set your own price on the collectible. Since I had two 9.4 Buffys, I put one on Amazon just to ensure that it would exist at the value I wanted it to exist at (around $350). I honestly never expected someone to purchase it for that amount (a 9.4's book value is $80.00). But because so few exist, I'm able to set the price and it just so happened someone must have *really* wanted that comic at that time, which now makes that comic's average amongst sellers (not necessarily book value) sky rocket.

In the end it's really about how exclusive the thing is, right?

160 Ultimate Spidey is collectible, but if you have the sketch variant and that variant has the only 9.9 CGC rating, that means you have a one of a kind item. Which means your 2.99 book is selling for $1,650.00

nope wrong just because someone has it listed at that price doesn't mean its worth that. If you look he already has 6 offers but since the auction is still going none are close to that price. Also you might want to delete that link since that will get you into trouble since we can't post links to other sites

Ah, sorry.

And yeah -- the only thing that matters is what it actually sells for. Like I said, I had my issue of Buffy *listed* for $345 just to give an overall indication of what I felt its value to be, but it wasn't until someone purchased it for that price that the sale actually influenced the value of the book overall.
