Hi there.
I have recently purchased a 'factory sealed' comic and, though I'm happy with the comic, the sealing leaves a lot to be desired (wrong size bag, no backboard, grubby).
I really want to remove it from this and place it in a proper bag and board, but if I do so, will it remove any value the original 'sealing' may have placed on it?
Sorry if the question sounds a little naive, but I am very new to comic collecting, currently just finding my feet and looking to see what I should be looking to collect - any help there would be greatly appreciated also.

As to what you should collect, that answer's easy. Collect what you like. Into Batman? Collect Batman. Into mutants? X-Men. That's the beauty of the hobby ... you can collect what you like.
As for "factory sealed" comics ... my opinion is to ahead and change out the bag and board to something you're happier with. There are a few people who might "ding" you a little if it's a Dynamic Forces variant, and it doesn't have the little holofoil "seal" but the value really won't be hurt that much.

Depends on which comic it is. May have some impact, but probably won't.

Use a hairdryer to remove DF sticker, works every time. Then reuse sticker on new bag (always Mylar). Yeah, factory sealed comics...not that great to look at. Open it up! You'll feel so much better releasing that trapped and scared little book into the world!

Removing the original factory seal certainly lowers the value. It isn't significant, though.
What is the item we're talking about?

What is the item we're talking about? Agreed. Most polybagged comics from the 90's for sale on CCL are pretty much the same price either bagged or unbagged. The only exception I can think of is Superman #75 Black Polybagged Edition.

I think what usually happens is that once the seal is removed, nobody really knows it was ever sealed....so it is tough to gauge the relative value of something in that way. However, if the seal is still on it, that increases the value. Many collectors view a factory sealed item as the mintiest of minty freshness (know what i mean?)

except for the fact that the bags the publishers put them in are total crap and do little if anything to actually protect the book (and in some cases damage it because they are a horribly low quality plastic).

I completely disagree with comicuniversity. I'm guessing (though he hadn't said so) that it's probably just a variant cover, that is sometimes (depending on which side of the bed DC got out of) "sealed" with a little sticker with the diamond code on it. I'm saying this, because of his reference to the bag not being the right size. If this IS the case, it's just another bag-and-board.
If it's the DF sticker, which is easily removable, that's no big deal, either. And really, are there THAT many valuable DF books? Are the nudie variants really that valuable?
Encasing a book in a CGC case, while a travesty against the industry, does increase the believed value of a book. A bag-and-board, or even a polybag (excepting Superman 75 -- which isn't exactly worth a mint) does not increase the value of the book.
