Is there actually an error version of this comic? I have seen some labelled as such on eBay but I don't really have much faith in that.

Here is the actual cover.

I have two that look like this:

Now, one of them appears like someone ripped the pane off. I can see signs of scuffing where it would have been attached so it looks like that one was defaced. However, the second one is clean and I don't see any evidence that it ever had the pane in the first place.

Does anyone know any more about this? Confused

BTW - If in fact the one I have that looks like it is missing the thing how would that be graded? PR?

As far as an error version goes, where it was manufactured without the pane, anything is possible, right? We've all seen foil covers without the foil. So I guess it could happen.

I could see some kid ripping off the pane just out of sheer curiosity or boredom alone. As for removing it with such care so as not to damage the book? I don't see that happening. What would be the purpose? The book would already be defective with the pane missing, so why take extra care not to damage the rest of the comic? A dealer wouldn't take the time because there's not enough money to be made by doing it to make it worthwhile.

I have a Sensational Spider-Man #0 with a similar cover enhancement, except mine had the pane placed upside down. The comic doesn't appear to be damaged. I just don't see why anyone would alter the book in such a way.

I carefully removed the pane from the cover of my copy.

But I also took the entire cover off and bound the comic into a hardcover. Since cardstock covers don't really play nice with custom binding, I used a scan of the cover. I scanned the cover intact, then took the pane off and scanned it again. I then used some Photoshop magic to add Pa Kent's arm to the Superman image, so I could still have the original image but not all washed out.

So there's reasons for this to exist. But it's almost impossible to prove that there was an error batch, and it's entirely too easy to fake it. If someone really wants that cover without the pane, there's plenty of copies out there to be purchased for $1 or less -- so buy two copies and deface one.

But the people most likely to buy an "error" version at a premium are usually the folks with more money than brains.

How easy was it to remove the pane without leaving marks on the book?

It's been so long that I can't recall the exact process, but I found the discarded cover. At first glance, you couldn't really tell that anything was pulled off. If you look close, there's a slight line of residue at the top of the pane, and then there's a little bit of bubbling underneath where Pa Kent's arm would be. But I have to tilt it and look close to notice any of it.

The first one I came across looked normal, like nothing had been there. That's why at first I thought it might have been released that way on purpose which seemed kind of silly. Just Superman with his arm outstretched looked a bit off.

Then I found the second one and it looks obvious that some pretty much just ripped it off. Why? I don't know. Maybe they wanted to put the reaching hand on something.

I was trying to find out if there was some kind of a recall maybe. I know companies do that sometimes when pages are printed out of order, etc. Couldn't find anything. All I saw were a handful of eBay sellers calling it an "Error" cover and asking crazy money,

Anyhoo, what kind of grade would you give one of these? There's a very large important piece missing I would say. Probably not even worth the bag and board you might put it in. PR? INC?

As for condition, it's a dollar book for me in NM, so I wouldn't think too much about it. Since the rest of the book is in tip top shape, I'd give it a little bit of credit and call it GD or VG with a note.

Me too, and then I replaced it - you'd never know it did it.
