so there's a leak in my ceiling. again. most likely its from a clogged drain upstairs that now leaks into my living room. what gonna be a bigger pain is renting this b!tch out and having to worry about other people messin crap up. ugh! i love how stressful the holidays are!

I know, right! A lot of people don't consider the extra costs involved in homeownership when they purchase a house and can get into real trouble. This happened to me on my first house and we got foreclosed on. Second time around, we bought an older house that didn't have more room than we need and was in pretty good shape (I'm not a real good handyman). Two weeks ago, we bought a new car. A day later the furnace finally took it's last gasp and we had to buy a whole new one (high efficiency natch!). while we were on the phone with the furnace dudes (literally) the hot water heater started spewing water all over. Had to replace that.
2 days later, my wife was removing the molding around the top of our kitchen and she knocked our oven range down and I had to fix that.
Home ownership. huh.

yeah, thanks Jeff. i'm a decent handy man but this just (banned) me off because its the second time we had a leak up there. luckily i just have to call a plumber to snake it. replacing the drywall will be simple enough. my old man is a carpenter and he'll be here to help me out. i'm just tired of sh!t falling apart like comicuniversity said lol. FML

It seems like every time I finish paying for one repair something else breaks. And don't get me started on roofers and insurance companies!

yup, it can suck - it really hit me when our water heater took a dump. "oh crap! i can't just call the landlord..." on the other hand, I don't have to listen to the neighbors fighting/f@ck!ing, watching TV, partying, stomping, crying kids, etc etc etc and I no longer have to deal with the nasty smells of all my neighbors cooking. i definitely think the positives of being a home owner still outweigh the negatives. i damn sure don't miss living in apartments.

i definitely think the positives of being a home owner still outweigh the negatives.
i damn sure don't miss living in apartments. oh thats for sure brother. i enjoy being a home owner way more. i hate people so its nice not dealing with people in such a close area.

A couple weeks ago my wife just got her summer holiday payout from work and literally the same day the garage door opener broke. So at least we got money to buy a new garage door opener.

my garage door broke Thanksgiving day when we were leaving for my mom's... parked outside that night and our first Black Friday stop was Home Depot!

Just wait until one of your kids flushes a toy down the toilet, that leads to some awesome repairs later on. Especially if it makes it past the toilet and into the actual plumbing where it gets stuck and causes the entire plumbing to back-up. Nothing like seeing sewage seeping up into your bath tub.

yeah, my garage opener went out as well... still need to fix that. now i sitting with 4 holes in the ceiling, no fixed leak, 125 bucks less in my account and a continuation for tomorrow. fml

Yup! I've been there. It is NOT pleasent. yeah dude thats sh!ty. i'm waiting for those horrid days to come. i've been lucky so far with my 5 yr. old.

It doesn't get easier as you get older, just different. Simple Pat - 4saken1 doesn't live in NJ. Drive an hour west of you into PA and check out the taxes. You'll be moving in no time. NJ's property taxes are stupid high. I'm getting close to $9k a year on property taxes.

What burns me up lately is all the government FEMA AID being dolled out here in CT/NY/NJ for peoples property that's been hit by the storms the past couple years. Here in Bridgeport, we have had about 4 years now, where they have declared emergencies for FEMA AID. My own home has an old roof on it, and it is so old, the shingles are peeling off with every weather event that comes along. HIGH WIND STORMS, tornado thunder storms, hurricanes, nor'easters! Every one of them leaves more and more shingles in my yard. It will cost about 6000 to 16000 to replace it, depending on the contractor and level of stuff I want done. The thing is, I do not have that kinda cash laying around, nor can I finance it cuz we are so under water on the mortgage, they will never lend us another penny until we are in our 20th year of payments on our mortgages, assuming the value doesn't go down as well as our balance. A friend of mine, had a strip of his aluminum siding come off his house from a really bad wind storm we got a couple years ago, and they replaced the whole house's siding because that kind of siding no longer exists. He told me to put one in for my roof. So I put a claim in two years ago when Connecticut and Bridgeport had those weather related declarations. You have to first put the claim in with your homeowners insurace then FEMA if the insurance will not pay. My insurace said the roof was coming off because it was old, and not cuz of the weather. BS! Old or not, it is still coming down from the weather. No pay! They even said that I have a month to get a new roof on, or they would not renew my homes insurance. FEMA said the same thing. And another thing, the front of the house, the roof is not peeling at all, but just loosing the grainy stuff. ONly the back roof is peeling and coming off! So how can that be age? The front and back are the same age! OK, I moaned enough! LOL So, everyone else can get it paid for but not me. It's just not fair.
