As I am sitting here on the East Coast awaiting the fury of Winter Storm - what are we on now? Q? Rocky? Xerxes? - I can't help thinking about sandwiches. There are so many good ones out there and the possible combinations are virtually endless.
The most important element of any sandwich is the foundation - or the bread. Whether it's a thick slice of whole wheat, a nice deli style pumpernickle, soft pita, hoagie roll or tortilla - the bread makes the sandwich.
Next apply the mortar - mustard, mayo, vinaigrette, hummus, BBQ sauce - something to keep the ingredients together and enhance flavor.
Now for the structure! Meat! Cheese! Veggies! Any or all of the above. Pile it on!
Just off the top of my head here are some personal favorites:
Italian Sub - crusty roll, brown mustard, mortadella, genoa salami, prosciutto, muenster, LTO, oil & vinegar. Hot or cold, doesn't matter.
Chicken Salad Club - triple decker on rye, white meat chicken salad, bacon, lettuce, tomato.
Grilled Cheese with bacon and tomato - enough said.
One of my personal favorites that I used to make at a restaurant I worked at was a BLT made with this incredible bacon-tomato bread that we got from a local bakery. We'd toast that then slap on some avocado mayonnaise, a couple or five slices of crispy pancetta, a slab of romaine and thick sliced roma tomatoes. To. Die. For.
So, my question to you is: What is your favorite sandwich!
Quality. Consistency. Variety. Reliable. Fair. Friendly
