With android, mytouch, all different types of crackberries, and various other portable devices trying to overthrow the iPhone why spend all that time? Let's face it, the iPhone is a fad and nothing more. Soon apple, and all the other electronics makers, will move on to something cooler and newer and so will all of their customers. Why not make a portable application that can work on multiple platforms instead of for a platform that won't even be around in 2 or 3 years?
Just wondering... That sounds like what would make the most sense to me. Sig by PHILLI(AKA THE BOMB!)

Just wondering... Seriously? It won't be around in 2 or 3 years?? Come on, dude. The iPhone is a fad like the internet was a fad. I've yet to run into somebody who is unhappy with the iPhone. I'm in a 2 year contract and I can't see myself living without one. It's like driving a car vs. riding a bike to work. I'm not going back to the bike once I get used to the car. I've come to realize that any company that has the means to create an iPhone app and doesn't, must not care enough about their company's visibility. It's an awesome marketing tool. I downloaded the Chipotle app. It lets me order Chipotle from my iPhone without standing in line. Even if I never used it, I've got the Chipotle logo staring me in the face every time I look at my phone. That's good marketing and it's relatively cheap. I would hope some of the development work for the iPhone can cross over to other platforms if another device gets serious with an app network, but for right now what other phone offers thousands upon thousands of apps? If I buy a phone for apps, there's one phone I'm buying. I just don't think it's a waste. I sell as many books on CCL as anybody does and I NEED an iPhone app.

Yeah, what he said. Seriously though, Apple makes awesome products that people want. I think the question should be more like: why would'nt you make a CCL app for the iphone?

Financially speaking it makes sense to develop an iPhone app. They will make CCL money and aren't going anywhere anytime soon. That said, there is true wisdom in further developing a version of CCL that is platform agnostic. This way CCL isn't pidgeon-holed to any passing 'fad'.

Just wondering... Good question. The best answers I have right now is that we have had lots of requests for it, and its' development is helping open the gateway to other applications for CCL, including the MAC version. I personally do NOT own an iPhone, but my girlfriend does, and I can't WAIT for us to be able to look up my collection via her phone in an app designed for that use.

I have an answer to this, but don't want to share it publicly just yet, but stay tuned, as I will be posting as we finalize some things here. JB

Cool enough. There are so many 'smart phones', PDAs, and various other portable devices out there with wireless and wi-fi capability that it just seems odd to me to so drastically limit your potential customer base. My current cell phone just does phone, but I'm looking to upgrade and have absolutely no interest in the iPhone. With the fact that you can get Wi-Fi just about anywhere these days, I'd even put it on my PSP if it were possible - but since you can't install apps on the PSP a version of the online wishlist that is designed specifically for mobile devices would be pretty sweet too. For example: 9news.com versus m.9news.comthe second is basically the same site as the first, but it is optimized for mobile devices. I'm not saying 'do this for the whole CCL site', but if I could log in to my wishlist and view it in such a mobile optimized manner that would be great for when I'm at an LCS doing some back-issue hunting. Sometimes a printed Excel sheet just doesn't cut it, especially when there are variants or multiple volumes of the same title - there's like 7 different Youngblood #1s and I bought half of them trying to find the one I was looking for...

You're comparing a single device (that is beginning to lose market share and appeal) to a vast network that is expanding exponentially. I know at least 5 people who have gotten rid of their iPhones because they thought they were total pieces of sh!t... I wasn't looking for fanboy rants, just some real input about why it wouldn't be better to develop for multiple platforms, therefor NOT limiting your customer base to one specific piece of technology that WILL be obsolete in less than 5 years. How about...The iPhone is a fad like the iPod was a fad. You can't seriously believe the iPhone won't be around in 2 or 3 years. Just because something with complete market domination is "beginning to lose market share," I don't think that's a sign of impending doom. How much is Verizon ready to pay Apple to get the iPhone when their AT&T contract is up? How much is AT&T ready to pay to keep exclusivity? That's not 2 or 3 year money. I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy, but you can't just hate on something and make outlandish claims. I mean, if you said 10-15 years, nobody knows. But 2-3 years? Oh, and PLENTY of people thought the internet was a fad: http://www.newsweek.com/id/106554

I know the iPhone or anything else like it is something I won't buy anytime in the next 5 years. Just because of the overall costs. Before I go to a show I export my wishlist and put it on my ipod -or- i text the main issues to my phone and just save them. But that's me :)

Oh, and PLENTY of people thought the internet was a fad: http://www.newsweek.com/id/106554 It's still not clear to me how any of this tells me why ONLY developing for iPhone is a better idea than developing something that could be used on mulitple platforms, thereby increasing potential income instead of limiting it. On a side note, do you really believe that nobody will come up with something better than the iPhone in the next 2 or 3 years? Though such devices are pointless wastes of money in my viewpoint, I do try to keep up on tech in general and everything I've been reading, seeing, and hearing shows the mytouch is about to blow the iPhone out of the water in regard to features as well as overall quality. I've played with both and although cool, they're ulitmately a waste of my time... Cell phones aren't the same as music players - they're much more like fashion statements and people demand a MUCH higher turn-over/evolution in the technology and features found in a cell phone than what they expect in a freakin' walkman...

I think they're developing for iPhone because it's easy, and it's going to make it easier to develop for multiple platforms when the time comes. I agreed with you all along about that, I don't think limiting yourself is ever a good idea. I just thought your claim of the iPhone being gone in 2-3 years was cwazy. Shouldn't everybody (including Apple) have something better in 3 years? Apple can barely sit on a new iPhone for 6 months, let alone 3 years.

That's a good point, but I really think they will. The app store is a huge part of owning an iPhone or iPod Touch, they would be doing a disservice to their customers and their developers by changing things up. Not to say they haven't done it before, but never on that level. Going from 9 to OSX, a lot of older programs for 9 wouldn't work on OSX, and the move to intel also had the same effect. But I would hope an app is more universal, and in this case you're buying it FROM APPLE so they're the ones who bear the brunt of the anger if a previously purchased app doesn't work. At the very least, I think they'd strongarm the developers to make whatever updates were needed before they rolled out the new iPhone 17GsPROliteABC or whatever they'd call it. App updates are free and easy to install. If I was thinking about re-upping my contract for a phone or going to a competitor and I had already invested hundreds of dollars into apps and music, it would be a no-brainer. You stick with the investment, and barely look at the competition. If I had to start all over, I'd look at every competitor. Apple knows this. At the very least, a CCL app will work on MY PHONE and that's all that matters :) Really, it should make my customer service better and make my shipping time much faster. It's already helped a lot with the business, but having the actual app would be so much easier.
