I just want to make sure, the 2nd printing is marked 2nd printing in the indica AND it has a different price than the 1st printing. Correct?

Hey Mike, I have never seen a second printing of that issue so I don't know for sure but what I can say is that all of the other early second printings of that series (the ones that I have) stated so in the indica and are all a different price than the first printing. Hope that helps!

I am not sure there WAS a second printing of #1 (assuming that 2004 and later reprintings don't qualify as "second printings"). If there was one, CCL, MHC, and GCD all have yet to hear about it.

I must be slipping in my old age..I thought it had a 2nd printing.

I had a dealer tell me was a 2nd print as he sold it to me for 75 cents.

Good thing I didn't question him.

I actually feel a little bad...a very tiny bit Devil

If I remember correctly there were a number of early issues that had second prints that were only detectible by checking the dates on the ads. Nothing was mentioned in the indicia or elsewhere.

The following stores are all stores that I've dealt with or have become friends with through the forums and I highly recommend them all.
Comics Castle-owned & operated by Pat McCauslin
Alpha Comics--ComicVortex--Metropolis Connections 2.0--Comic Cellar

On the other hand, if you can prove that there was a second printing, and if you can document the variations from the first printing, doing so before MHC or GCD could be quite a coup.

Things that might be worth checking: price, dates in ads, indicia, the color stripe across the top edge of the book.

Even if you bought a first printing, though, you got one heckuva deal, pricewise!

Weren't their two versions of this--one printed on Baxter paper, the other on standard newsprint?

Seems to be the same as the one in the catalogue except newstand (upc) instead of direct.

Anybody have the Direct one to compare?

@ pottersan:

You didn't tell us this comic was a newsstand version. I'll bet THAT's why the dealer thought it was a second print.

As some others here already know, newsstand comics, particularly of 1979–82 Marvels, are the versions that I prefer to collect. The notion of a dealer who would give away a valuable comic because it DIDN'T have direct-sales markings is so poignant it makes me want to weep.

Even so, I wouldn't mind running into this guy at a convention. Does he do mail order?

Nope, just a local game shop who dabbles in comics.
