..we're expecting you....OK, apologies for the Love Boat reference. So, my suggestion for a history forum has been accepted. Woo-hoo! Now, what my goal is, is to have a place where we can discuss not only the history of comics, but how they relate to the events of history. I got the idea between epcomic's fact of the day thread, and while poking around on superdickery.com, particularly the propaganda section. I'll be starting up a few threads to get things rolling. That's cool. My LCS is more or less just conversations among who ever is there at the time, nothing formal, or even semi-formal like that. Be sure to post any interesting topics that get discussed there here. Back in my college days, I took a course called History and Popular Culture. We had to read a lot of comics, watch old serials, cartoons and TV shows, then discuss how the stories and characters reflected the times. One day the prof asked if anyone knew anything about Wonder Woman (this was before the TV show) and I gave an impromtu lecture that took up most of the class that day. That was a tough couse!

I took a couple of course like that. One was about images of various people in pop media (movies, books, and comics), and one was a history of Baseball which had a mandatory "field trip" to Fenway for a game. Also had one on Vietnam which involved several movies from various periods and how they related to the perceptions of Vietnam and what was going on. Funny how the Math Department at my U. never offered classes like that. Stupid math............. I did however spend 40 minutes yesterday talking to my class about the WWH and Planet Hulk storyline (as we were discussing the difference between vengence and justice.)

This has nothing to do with with what has been previously stated on this site. I just think that since we're talking history, I find it really very interesting that back in the golden age we portrayed "our enemies" as these cartoony, funny, bumbling, idiots that could be easily defeated by just showing up, and since we were on the side of the angels we win. I I think that the image of Tojo with big slanted eyes and glasses, cheesy mustache,in his Imperial Army uniform created by comic artists, helped to perpetuate a stereo type of asian people that has lasted to the present day. So comics really can influence not just the fans but a nation as well. What do you think?
