Coming Soon on CCL

OK, the subscription fee has been implemented. The CR2.0 is about half done. And there is a top secret project being worked on at the CCL bull pen. But here are a few things coming down the pipe and posted for your discussion:

1.	A Title page with information about the entire series.
2.	A Character Page with information about a specific character.
3.	A Publisher Page with information about the publisher.
4.	A creator page with information about the creator.
5.	A new releases page with a date picker, to see past, present, and future releases.
6.	A virtual hold box that a member can set up with a store.
7.	A virtual pull list that a member can provide to a store.
8.	The ability to store your collection on our servers.
9.	The ability to manage your collection remotely through a web browser.
10.	A silverlight (Mac Compatible) interface for managing your collection.
11.	Enhanced reporting on the software.
12.	Price guide module to appraise your collection.

There is more, but I am not allowed to talk about it just yet. I want to thank the community for their support and suggestions, and look forward to a great year. Our goal is to always provide our subscribers with the cool tools they need to enhance their experience with this cool hobby.

It's like CCL does everything Comic Collecting related but read the comics for you!

Wait, I guess it even does that with the issues reviews!

Glad I came across that Wizard add back in late 2007.

CLL rejuvenated my comic collecting. Thanks to all at CCL!

Can you provide any insight on what the source of the pricing would be? Overstreet? Joe Butler says so? Market stats on CCL? I've found that most price guides are rarely on the mark for actual market prices.

No, there will still be software. There are some things that the web just can't do, especially with a large collection. But what we have done is open our system for much, much more in the software arena.

This has been a big discussion. We have a planed system that allows us to be flexible with this. I have my own ideas on this, that I have not shared with anyone so what we actually release remains to be seen. There are some legal things being looked at as well.

And to go along with that, most markets vary greatly. The thing I like about the Overstreet is that they include articles form a great variety of dealers across the country and what is and is not moving in their area.

I would say that CCL could well within reason, use current and past sales on this site as a big determinant of value.

Ultimately, I put the onus on the individual to gather information from various sources ( Overstreet, CCL, eBay and even....ehhyyeehhh wizard...) to get a reasonable value for an issue.

I can certainly see where server maintenance would quickly become cumbersome and expensive. Not to mention how much storage capacity would be needed.
Even with limited capability, I can see where a lot of people will probably use the web-based part more than the software. Personally I don't have a CrackBerry or 'smart' phone and do not need mobile access to the interwebs, but what can I say -- I'm an old fart.

As for the price guide, as with all price guides it will only be a 'gee whiz' kind of thing for me. Price guides are guesstimates at best.
There are 2 CoIE tie-in issues on my wishlist that I've been wanting for a while. My LCS has both in VF at the best and wants $15.00 a piece for them.
I've seen them on eBay for upwards of $80 in VF, and seen them here as low as $0.90 in F/VF!
These funny books are really only worth as much as you can get somebody to pay for them. Priceguide or no.

I've always thought that Overstreet Price Guide is the industry standard. But at the same time, I see that it is becoming outdated in the internet age; since prices are fluctuating much quicker than on a yearly basis, even for newer issues. If Overstreet made a smaller, monthly guide, like Wizard or Beckett, it would probably solve a lot a problems. Maybe some sort of cross-promotion between the CCL site and Overstreet? I don't know, I don't have a clue how these business things work. Just a suggestion.

Overstreet had a monthly price guide back years ago, called "Fan". They couldn't keep up with the market on a monthly basis and went back to the yearly published format. I think using Overstreet, Wizard and Comicbookrealm, comicspriceguide.com should be the medium. Most of the stores here, sell stuff at 50% off guide as promotions. Just because we sell things for 50% off guide or at a discounted rate, I don't think that should effect the value of what it should be listed at.

Awesome updates btw added to CCL so far.

Do you have a "hold slot" at your LCS?? If so, that is it.

If not, it is a way to "subscribe" to a bunch of titles, and then buy them as they release. Imagine saying "I want all Uncanny X-Men", and automatically ordering them when they come out.

Well, I really hope that the virtual pull lists won't require a subscription because it isn't dependent on that part of things unless you want to add what you're buying to your local database.

I don't know if I'm the first but as far as I know I invented the term for Errant Entertainment. It works identical to the way pull boxes work at an LCS except its online. I hid the ones on my forum but if you want I'll give you access to a closed one so you can see.

Basically I set up a category just like the Marvel Discussion thread here and named it "So and So's Virtual Pull List". The first thread is locked and named Current Pull list and it contains a list of the books that person collects. The second thread is open and is called "Box Contents". When I receive books each week I physically put them in a long box with seperators for each person and then list the books for that person in their thread.

When they are ready to check out they send me a PM and ask for an invoice. I start another thread with the date as the subject and list all the books with a total in it. That way they can always go back and reference past purchases anytime they choose.

The only draw back to my method is the lack of cover images and the ability for them to just add the stuff to a cart and check out when it suites them rather than needing me to send a Paypal money request. Thats the icing on the cake.

Jim's virtual pull boxes work out great! Been using them for quite some time and am most happy with them! As he indicates, the ability to buy and have shipped whenever we want is awesome. I have him ship my books about once a month, allowing me to fill a box and keep my shipping costs way down! (Unfortunately, that means my reading is behind all the time!)

The only other thing missing from my perspective is the automatic insertion of my books into my CCL collection when I buy them!

I used to subscribe from impulsecreations and they didn't use images. It was just a text version, very nice system because once the new previews was out the new issues and what not were added. So me personally, I wouldn't need images just an update with the new previews. And if there was something that was not added due to low numbers or a toy, there is a write in feature. So we could notify them of what we wanted.

You nailed it. It's the number one reason why you don't hear about viruses on Mac systems. Or Linux, for that matter... makes no sense to hijack an OS that is 100% open source.

There will always be a reason to have the software. Because many collections are so large, it would be hard to manage them through a website. A software product can process so much faster.

1.	A Title page with information about the entire series.Awesome. This fills my head about a lot of relevant information that could be offered...revivals of Golden Age characters, trends in the industry towards 'cosmic' or monster titles, etc.
2.	A Character Page with information about a specific character.much needed, even if only to make sure that submitters are getting the right 'Warlock' for example. If this could have a tie into the database that would show chronological lists of appearances...WAY COOL
3.	A Publisher Page with information about the publisher.
4.	A creator page with information about the creator.Imagine if we got to the point where CCL members could conduct interviews with creators for input here
5.	A new releases page with a date picker, to see past, present, and future releases.I agree with the comment about how this feature could be parlayed into showing what's coming in the week ahead. Right now I am driven to go to an unspecified web page (think mid-town manhatten) to see what's coming. If they have the rights to publish online these preview images, why not CCL?
6.	A virtual hold box that a member can set up with a store.
7.	A virtual pull list that a member can provide to a store.
8.	The ability to store your collection on our servers.while mine would be too big to manage that way, what about Wish Lists online? Then I could have a PDA at a convention and know what I need.
9.	The ability to manage your collection remotely through a web browser.
10.	A silverlight (Mac Compatible) interface for managing your collection.AMEN!
11.	Enhanced reporting on the software.
12.	Price guide module to appraise your collection.Awww...GREAT! Now I have to GRADE my collection...](*,)

The scope of what you have laid out is impressive, Joe. I like the way that you have been able to thusfar implement changes piecemeal. It probably drives your staff mad, but it keeps whetting the appetites of those hungry for new features. Again, well done, CCL Maestro.

I have been asking about using issue titles to help putting the right names in issues. With the questions of how names should be delt with it makes sense that somrthing like this is needed. Most people know that Dennis the Menace is about Dennis Mitchell but how many know Margaret, Joey, Tommy, or Gina's last names. If you could enter a title then a name & search that gives a list of choices with descriptions that could be used by submitters for issue info that would help create a list of issues appearances.

It's now February 2nd. What is the status of this feature? The further we get from the 1st of the year, the more I get the feeling that I was told a lie in order to get me to subscribe.
This is one of our top priorities for the software. The reporting is somewhat lacking with the custom fields and we are aware of that. We still should be able to do this the first part of this year, but it is tough to nail down a specific date.

Development is fluid. Not like manufacturing or farming. That is why we do general time frames. We have been working on CR 2 all fourth quarter, and expected to have it done in 3 months, but it is taking longer, as often we have to adapt to changing environment.

Same with the software. We had to update much of the back end to support some of the data tie ins. (i.e. ability to add publishers to issues, support for CR 2, item bio's on all objects, etc...) We still have some work to do on creators. Anyway, the custom reports is on the short list.

Invariably, when you ask questions of professionals, even those working in the same field, you are going to get different answers. Not every problem is solved the same manner, and not every business is run by the same management. It's like; if you ask ten different Medical Docters the same question, you will receive ten different answers. Are nine of them wrong, and one right, absolutely not. It's just that each case is different, and there is more than one right course of action.

I guess what I'm saying is, the software and website development of CCL has been awesome thus far, regardless of whether or not one agrees with the subscription fee. I belive Joe, and the rest of the staff at CCL, are developing as much as possible, as fast as possible.

I'm a computer programmer. That's how I pay the bills. If our company states a target date to paying customers, heads would roll if we didn't meet that target date.
I imagine that you have a few headless programmers there. Even the best miss a deadline here and there. Or they adjust scope to meet deadlines.

Anyway, at project start we had scope laid out, and deadlines in place. Now, we are adding features and enhancments so we work with general time lines. Often, we will have to break pace to work on unexpected issues. Either a Paypal issue (they have been known to change processing procedure with no notice) or a store processing bug, etc... Sometimes it is simply a quick project to improve customer usability that we have noticed. Things like this will side track us some, but we always get back on track.

Also, we often make judgment calls in adjusting scope to improve future usability. That happend with some of the data structure that we had to make recently.

Anyway, not trying to get out of this, just stating how the process works at CCL. This is on our short list, and will be forth coming.

Coming Soon on CCL

In the CCL gangs defense, here, again. Having been in corporate software development, the most difficult thing to do is project completion times on a software project. Things happen. Priorities change, new ideas come up. Ultimately the best you can do is manage expectations. Unfortunately, sometimes that means hard targets may have vague completion dates (e.e. first quarter) or may not even be promised. For those of us in the user community this is a very difficult thing to live with sometimes. The worst thing Joe and the gang could do is say they will have something be a certain date and then not produce it. I think Joe is doing a good job of managing our expectations.

Another point here, is this development involves INTEGRATED online and desktop functions. This is no simple development. This sometimes requires a great deal of structure development on both sides, some of which we, the users, DO NOT SEE. From our perspective, this can be very frustrating as it appears nothing is happening. Additionally, some level of testing must happen, to minimize problems on release. Again, not a trivial effort (been there, done that). The gang here have done a great job of rolling out changes with few problems! But I am still confident that Joe and the gang ARE in fact moving this application in the right direction.

Someone said, "If our company states a target date to paying customers, heads would roll if we didn't meet that target date." Well, missed targets, whether stated or anticipated, are not uncommon at all. Look at Blizzard and their development of Starcraft II for a graphic example of this. There was huge hype last year when Blizzard started showing screen shots at the software cons and tremendous anticipation of a late '08 or early '09 release - that has still not happened. And no word, yet of future release. But, eventually, it will release and their fans will drop their dime in a heart beat, for it and forget all about the delays.

I think, we too, will shortly see the results of the 'dimes' that we have already dropped. Be patient, I see good things coming! ...and I've been around for awhile...

Coming Soon on CCL But here are a few things coming down the pipe and posted for your discussion:

There are even more changes to come, I can hardly keep up with the current changes, don't get me wrong it's all good. I'm looking forward to some of these new advances that you're making in the software.

Now if you don't mind I'm going to go a little off topic.

we normally have to learn how to do everything on our own as right-handed people can't teach us.
What people usually don't consider is that left-handers HAVE TO be more intelligent (adept at lateral thinking anyway) since (at least with everything civilized engineered to accommodate right handers) left-handers would die very young otherwise.
I was a lefthander that was forced to become a righthander & now I'm neither & yet both at the same time. No worries, I'm all the wiser for it. Because if I had my choice I would be a lefty, but since I didn't have complete self choice & I'm a righty. But I still do know that there are a chosen few of us out there. My husband also was supposed to be a lefty & forced into becoming a righty. So we are two perfectly placed peas in our pod.

Now back to on topic, sorry Joe. I can't wait for some of these new phases to come into play. I'm excited that I found your wonderful software when I did & I'm thrilled that I can still see well enough now to use it.

However, when my eyes do finally go to the darkside & I do have to become totally dependent on voice activation software, and the voice activation software out there is also handy for the days that my limbs don't want to work, so I was wondering if there is a chance for having voice activation compatiblity sometime down the road, is it in the works because currently they don't intermix very well.

Thought I'd take a second to chime in. If we've given you the impression we're not working on stuff that people have asked for, or we misled you personally for your subscription fee, I'm personally sorry. #-o

I'm not a programmer by ANY stretch of the means, my friend, so I can't chime in on the "heads rolling" comment, but I do have a friend that's a programmer who constantly tells me about deadlines and scope on projects that he works on. I do know that the feature you requested IS being worked on, and additionally I know that we're working double-overtime on several other features here that have been asked for. It's a list here at CCL that is never fully complete and is constantly changing and evolving.

It's times like this I wish I had a random shelf of chemicals and a bolt of lightning. It'd make my job alot easier.

If you feel that CCL is not living up to your expectations after paying your subscription, I will personally be glad to refund your subscription.

All you have to do is keep your opinions on those issues on a seperate thread.

That's it.

Leave the announcement threads about what's Coming Soon to comments about what when can expect in the future. No offense to you personally, but I don't want to have to wade through back and forth comments about "CCL lied" / "No they didn't". I though we finally moved past that thinking.

Start your own thread listing your greviences and complaints about the rate of CCL's progress somewhere else.

$30.00 is yours for the taking....
"ntkeith" (a person who represents CCL based on the "Approver" label) calling me a liar and insulting me isn't doing much to make me think my assessment of the situation is wrong.
Then I'm not sure what to say. I'm a CCL employee and I'm personally addressing you. I won't speak for NT, nor does he speak for CCL. That's why I'm here talking to you now. There's my official disclaimer.

Before we get back on topic, and before discussing the expectation on your request, I would like to point out one of the great things about CCL is that you are getting comments, discussion and action from us directly on these subjects. We feel it's incredibly important to be right in here with you guys, and this is as much your project as it is ours.

Sometimes things get done exactly as we think they are planned out. Sometimes they get done early. Sometimes they get done late. But we have a WHOLE version history full of wants and requests from people who asked for things for the software that we try to fulfill. I will say in our defense that we aren't Microsoft. Just a small group of people trying to make a damn good program better - and we get behind. Sad but true. But we are working harder than ever, of that you can be sure.

Pottersan, I appreciate you stepping up in that manner. You're a class act, my friend. However, the burden falls on us. I'm sending a PM to you, Rich and I'll be glad to continue the dialogue on this subject with you personally as well.

Hey richnixon5, you have a valid grip here. I get frustrated when things take longer than they should. I'm listening, and I want this as bad as you do. But I can't give you a firm date. This is on our short list though.

I see you've decided to join the attack squad against me and make snide remarks.

I don't care about $30; I care about receiving what I bought. Since it appears that's not going to happen, I believe I have the right to discuss what I think of CCL all I like - my $30 bought me that.

But go ahead - continue to throw stones.
Nothing in that statement was an attack on you. I was trying to make you aware of a program that I thought would be good for your needs. One that I can personally recommend.

I agree that you have a right to say whatever you want about CCL and I will never tell you not to. I do think you should stick to attacking CCL and not the members of the site that happen to disagree with you. As paying members they have that right too. You should be man enough to give them the same rights you expect, and I'm sure you are. Not every differing point of view is an attack on you. Don't read them that way.
"The price however will truly give you something to complain about."

That statement was an attack on me. You are implying I don't currently have something true to complain about.
Sorry, you read something into it that wasn't intended. I meant to say that the price is excessive in my opinion. I didn't mean it as a reference to anything said about CCL, just a comment on ComicBase, nothing more. To quote Joe from this thread...

"However, during this recast and revision phase and to get a handle on all the projects and expenses, we have had to put the site director, and the 2 developers on a non-paid basis. It could be 90 to 120 days to work through funding, updating vision, and identifying our strategy for the new economic climate. During this period our site director and developers are currently helping on a non-paid basis in their spare time as they still have a vested interest in the project, and quite frankly love CCL and the community. They are currently using the corporate development tools and hardware which have access to our internal network but are working in a pro-bono fashion while we recast. "

Sadly, Yes.

There are no paid developers. Which I read as development on hold. Realistically I'd imagine them continuing to work for free while they look for new jobs but once they land new jobs development on CCL will take a backseat. :-(

It will be interesting to see wha happens at the end of the summer, whether or not Joe is able to hire back his staff.

I think regardless of whether or not the previous satff is hired back (they may move on to new jb, etc, that they cannot just up and leave) CCL will eventually get back to development, possibly with new staff if needed. That's not based on anything I've heard, just speculation.

The economy seems to be improving to some extent, and hopefully software development will start up again soon (3-6 months). Again, have not heard anything specific, just imo.

Don't forget, CCL still operates as a functional site for buying and selling, as well as tracking your collection (assuming you're a subscriber), but there is of course the free trial period for new users.

yeah but that high is from 2 years ago when the economic outlook wasnt this bleek. CCL has a very good base of regulars to keep things going but it would probably be tough right now to get a store off the ground if you're a newcomer. I'm a firm believer that the economy will turn around sooner than later and with that ccl will get back on track with upgrades. oh, for sure, I'm almost certain that I'll pick up a sub once the trial period is up - I see potential and I'd like to try to support it, but I do also see some red flags, and hope that this will revert back to a free service, if just to reach a critical mass of users to ensure a vibrant community.

I'm really keeping my fingers crossed this subscription round is just a much needed cash injection to get through this rocky patch. I just don't see a subscription based service targetted at comic book aficionados being very viable, but that's probably a topic best left for another time.

Hey there!!!

Will there be any additions that will smplify accounting.

Something that would give us a total dollar figure of what we as sellers have listed.

I also often see people trying to sell an entire collection or sell the contents of their store their store. What if someone decided to do this is it possible to have a way to save on all the man hours used to list all these hours and combine the stores.

One idea I had would be to add in a make an offer on my collection offer that would just list the collection in a text/link format without thumbnails so you could click on if you wanted but could fit more on the page.

Let me know what you think.

Best Wishes,

After you've double checked, this can be tricky as the may be listed different than you would expect.

That FF King Size is listed under FF Annuals.
http://www.comiccollectorlive.com/LiveData/Issue.aspx?id=a08e35ad-8446-4cfa-bf25-996aa445487e

Also, make sure you post in the right section to make sure you get a proper response.

You question would best be posted in the Library section;
http://www.comiccollectorlive.com/forum/default.aspx?g=forum&c=3

Anyway, if you have searched thoroughly, you can then make a change request to add missing titles/comics to the database.

Working on 4 updates to the site so far. First implementation is cleaning up invalidations in the system before adding any major new updates. BUT there are a couple smaller cosmetic changes that are done and ready to implement...if I can hold Joe down long enough to get them implemented. ~x( lol

How about just asking for a Linux version instead? That would cover the Mac world as well as other OS's.

But, we won't even talk about your wholly incorrect statements.

Considering the full web interface that CCL has a vision of, I don't think you'll ever see a Mac specific version of the software itself.

The impression that I get, is that the database eventually will not require software at all, just a web browser.

(And that would be fine with me. Having access to my full collection and all features of the database from anywhere in the world and from any device with a web browser would be the cat's meow.)

See - I'm just the opposite. I hate web based apps - I've found them to be slower and less reliable than a desktop based app.

The current CR system is so much slower to enter data in than the original CR system. Mainly because you can't just tab thru from field to field or data section to data section.

I like the idea of having access to your collection from anywhere via a web interface, but abhor the idea of ONLY having access via a web interface.

Check your stocks man, Apple has moved between second and fourth for the last couple of months. Exxon Mobile (about 0.3 trillion), Apple (about 0.25 trillion), Wal-Mart (about 0.2 trillion), and Microsoft (about 0.25 trillion) have all been in the top four. The only one that is way ahead in first is Exxon Mobile. No one else is close. The others trade places back and fourth and Apple has been ahead at times over Microsoft. Per share, Apple is way ahead:

In mid-day trading, Apple shares briefly climbed to $292.76. That gave the company a market capitalization of $267.5 billion -- enough for it to top Chinese oil giant PetroChina for the No. 2 spot.

ExxonMobile is No. 1, with a market capitalization of more than $311 billion.

Apple slipped back to the No. 3 spot by market close, when its shares traded at $288.92.

Hey Reggie! Good to see you, buddy! Miss you in the NFL Forums. Can't remember, aren't you a Buccaneers guy?

To answer your questions in order:

What's up everyone?! - Bunch of crazy stuff!

Is Joe and Steve still around? - Not really.

No new stuff/updates to site or software? - Sadly, no.

Some of us are still hanging in there though. Hope to see more of you!

LOL Yeah big Bucs fan and never could stand the Patriots so Brady was kinda bitter sweet! I pop in every so often but don't post much. Good to see familiar faces still around!
