DC's Convergence

DC's big Convergence cross over event that's taking place during the company's move to the west coast has started to be announced. While I'm not a huge fan of event stories, I am a huge fan of multiverse stories, so I think I'm looking forward to these. Here's a look at the first week of book's from DC's website:
Last week we announced CONVERGENCE, the massively Multiversal crossover event that kicks off in April. Well, bit by bit we’re learning more about it. Today, CBR and io9 announced the first week of miniseries, complete with creative teams and very intriguing imagery. Set in the pre-Flashpoint DC Universe, these miniseries offer us glimpses of heroes from not too long ago including Stephanie Brown’s Batgirl, Wally West’s Flash, Renee Montoya’s Question, Barbara Gordon’s Oracle and a classic-suited Harley Quinn. Longtime fans will also want to take note of the creative teams, which include many of the same writers and artists who made these versions of the characters famous. Can you say Greg Rucka?!

Check out the art, teams and synopses below. Look for issue #1 of these two-issue miniseries to land in shops on April 8th, with issue #2 following on May 6th.

Agreed. I think they are saying that it will impact the NEW 52 in some way, or at least tie into it. The recent stuff with brainiac in Futures End ties in somehow.

Hopefully, this might MIGHT be a way for them to bring some of the clamoured-for characters into the N52 (I would say, like Stephanie, but she's been in Batman Eternal as Spoiler ... I dunno. Dual Stephanies?)

DC's Convergence

I'm guessing DC doesn't want my money. Each time they do one of these reboots, my pull list gets smaller. They are cancelling all the Lantern books. They are cancelling Supergirl to replace it with what; Bizarro.
Really!

And what's up with the artwork. Several of the Post Convergence and current books like Batgirl look like they belong on Nickelodeon. And the stories are for teen girls. How can a Batgirl taking selfies belong in the Bat family with the Dark Knight.

I have always been a DC guy, but this continuous rebooting or waves of books where they only run for 12-14 issues before being replacing by the next wave is pissing me off.

A statement said that DC is trying to "not alienate young women who fell in love with characters in their cartoons" What about alienating boys and men who have read their comics for years as comic super heroes not cartoons?

I know Green Lantern isn't being cancelled and there is a new book. But Red Lanterns & New Guardians are being cancelled But if you read what they are doing John Stewart is supposed to be the main character in the Green Lantern book. I don't know what Lost Army is about, but none of the books are to have Hal. He supposedly gives up his ring.

Lost Army is what happens to the rest of the Corps in the aftermath of Convergence. Apparently, they're lost in another universe.

*Edit: Solicit text from GL #41 - "“Renegade!” Beginning a new chapter in Hal Jordan’s life as he becomes the universe’s most wanted outlaw! And wait till you meet Hal’s new partner, Darlene. She’s definitely not what you’re expecting!" Hal will star in the main GL book, Jon will star in Lost Army.

Also, it appears Hal will be in Justice League again.

I know change isn't always bad. However, it's about being consistence. Since 2010 how many reboots has DC done, how many books have been cancelled from 2010-2014, how books have been changed since then. Detective Comics and Action Comics were DC longest running books and art and story changes were made from the 1940's till now without effecting the book, that's 70's years. How many changes have been made in 4 years. It's a pain when books you are reading don't make it pass 12 issues because replacements or changes are take over. I keep using Batgirl as an example, Cassandra Cain as Batgirl ran for 80 some issues then Stephanie Brown and Barbara Gordon. All of them kickass Batgirls with their own style and personalities and I would read any of them until now, where Barbara Gordon doesn't fight crime but takes selfies. Some changes just suck.

0's out for Convergence and it looks like we just paid for a list of comics DC thinks are key issues in their past with pictures and descriptions taking up what felt like a third of the book. If I'm understanding this based on very limited New 52 experience going into this, the Brainiac godmachinething has all these cities saved from across the multiverses of the past. That gives them the option to write the 2 issue stories asuming they take place in those cities only and they don't need to leave the city for any reason. They showed people beating on the domes and New 52 Superman upset about it so apparently the people know they're bottled like rats in a cage which kinda convlutes the retro stories happening uninfluenced. The whole vote to save your favorite thing is still very vague at this point also. Are we going to get a pay per use phone number at the end of the #2 issues to save our favorites like the guy on American Idol last night? You'd think for $4.99 cover price this stuff would be a little clearer afterwards and not have a half baked thrown together feel with a full of holes aftertaste. :-k

Hopefully by the time issue #1 gets here Wednesday I'll know a bit more about it. So far the whole Convergence thing has had a who cares kinda vibe from the walk-ins. Exactly one copy of the zero issue has left so far and one of the DC weekly guys put a zero in his hold-box to replace the two weeklies he was getting. He wasn't real thrilled about the cover price not being $2.99 though and passed on it until right before he left after we talked about it for 20 minutes or so looking at the posters hanging above the front cheap boxes. I started reading Justice League International which I should blow through quickly and get started on the Justice League New 52 title this week so maybe it'll make more sense with more New 52's read.
Really, it's the Superman titles, and especially the Superman Doomed storyline, along with Futures End and Earth 2 that will feed into Convergence.
I don't have any of those in the private stock. I do mainly DC team books and used New 52 as a stopping point except for Teen Titans which I've read complete through the last Annual and the first few issues of Firestorm which got cancelled. I've got all the Justice League International and I just read where they say in Issue #1 that the Justice League had already been around for 5 years which I was under the impression they started fresh and at the same time. I've got a good chunk of Justice League and Justice League of America ready to read and some Legion of Superheroes which also appears to have been cancelled. Obviously I'm most excited about the Convergence team stories but the whole city in a bottle thing where they know they're in a bottle type setup makes me wonder how they can tell a decent retro story. The Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes one alone seems like it would need universe or at least solar system in a bottle size bottles. Imagine the fun trying to explain this to people who aren't existting DC customers. You remember Crisis? No, You remember Zero Hour? No. Do you remember Flashpoint? No. Have you ever read a comic book prior to last year when we moved to town? No. There's a good portion of the local community that wasn't even alive yet when the spin racks came out of the old 7-Eleven, drug stores and gas stations in 1991 cutting off their source for ever stumbling onto this stuff as they grew up.

Update: So Justice League International #9 continues into Firestorm's #9 which I don't have. Justice League International ends after 12 issues and an annual and continues into Justice League which they established back in issue #1 that the Justice League had been around 5 years already at that point. So now if Justice League 1 begins with an orgin story like the cartoon version with the messed up Shazam, then they only have to progress the timeline about 6 months an issue to intersect smoothly with Justice League International and Firestorm. Now I'm thinking it might take until issue #2 of Convergence to get this New 52 and Convergence thing nailed down enough to explain but at least we know who OMAC and Brother Eye are.

Convergence #1 was pretty much a wander in the woods at night without a flashlight. No clue who anyone was or what any references they made were referring to until the very end when the announcements were being made to the cities.

The Harley Quinn and Teen Titans issues aren't horrible and appear to be able to stand alone from the weekly series. It appears each 2 issue series is having someone face off against someone from another city in issue #2. Only one will survive the day!!!! Now how they get from what should be 80-82 cities down to 40-41 is fairly straight forward. Anything beyond that is still completely vague. Maybe the Free Comic Book Day Divergence issue will have a final bracket setup and a phone number to vote or something to clear this up. It should be here any day now. :-d

Now for a short break to check on how the Battle Droids are doing then on to Convergence Justice League.
----------------------------------------
Convergence Justice League of all girls and a monkey babysitter wasn't bad either. Vader's death droids bringing the hurt and smoking everything named Convergence so far. Gotta bump that up the read list next time. Now to see what the Ant-man's up to.
-----------------------------------------
Well that was disappointing. FCBD Divergence's got nothing to do with Convergence. (Applying duck tape to not openly criticize until May 2nd).

There are 20+ new DC #1 issues starting in June as they ditch the New 52 thing. Doomed and most of the rest of the Prequels are to those #1's unless I mentioned an ongoing series 41 issue which also appears to have big changes in progress from the issue 40's being prequeled.
-----------------------------
BATMAN BEYOND #1
JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1
ROBIN: SON OF BATMAN #1
WE AREROBIN #1
BAT-MITE #1
BIZARRO #1
BLACK CANARY #1
CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER #1
DOOMED #1
DR. FATE #1
EARTH 2: SOCIETY #1
GREEN LANTERN: THE LOST ARMY #1
HARLEY QUINN/POWER GIRL #1
JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001 #1
MARTIAN MANHUNTER #1
THE OMEGA MEN #1
PREZ #1
RED HOOD/ARSENAL #1
SECTION 8 #1
STARFIRE #1
Midnighter #1
and DC/Vertigo has Mad Max: Fury Road #1.

----------------------------
Some of the big changes as near as I can interpret them
----------
Superman's now going to look like a slightly less stupid version of the 1990's Superboy.

Superboy appears to now look like the 1980's Superman and might have a secret fixation thing for Starfire.

Batman's nowhere to be seen but commisioner Gordon's dressed up in a knockoff imitation of Ironman armor that most likely was confiscated during a DC/Marvel flea market raid of fake designer imports during the whole Amalgam period. Good thing they don't clean out the evidence room too often.

The Justice league may never have a storyline in America again and possibly never on the planet itself seeming to be off to take on problems that should have been handled by the Green Lantern Corp.

Hopefully this becomes clearer soon.
---------------
Just finished Justice League 2 with the Detective Comics 41 preview and it appears Commisioner Ironmanbat is going to be carrying Detective Comics storyline also.

To answer your questions. When this event is over, both Aquaman and Flash will return to their regular numbering for the 2011 series, both starting again at #41. Nothing will be changed as far as I know in either series. This is not a complete reboot of the DC Universe, it's just opening the door for stories beyond the New 52 continuity to be told, or at least that's how I understand it.

OK, let me start by saying other than I know the event exists, I know nothing of Convergence despite the fact the I collect Aquaman and The Flash. I have not read any of the related issues nor have I read this enitre thread because I'm work and I don't have the time right now.

So my question is this: When this is over will they go back to the regular numbering sequence? Are they re-launching the DCU again? Any help for this lazy reader will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, padreglcc!

Pretty much agree. The main series has been great, and the Booster Gold tie-in is good (very cool that it's finishing the story from the Futures End book. There have been a couple of other cool tie-ins - Flash, Paralax, Supergirl - but they don't really matter to the overall story.

well, except for the Booster Gold issues, I basically threw money away on all the tie-in issues I bought...

are the "previews" at the end of the #2s part of the issues they tell you to buy?
for example the JSA issue has the "Truth" story and says "to be continued in Superman/Wonder Woman #18". Will S/W include what is printed in the JSA book, or will it pick up from where the JSA book ended?

True. The main series does essentially serve as a bridge between the ends of Earth 2 & Earth 2: World's End and the beginning of Earth 2: Society.

I don't get it. They were too busy with the move to publish their regular ongoing titles, but they weren't too busy to publish a slate of other titles? Why could moving prohibit one and not the other?

Also, it doesn't take a company two months to relocate headquarters. Not to mention stopping production on their products during the move. Can you imagine any other large company simply halting production for two months simply because of a move? I don't buy it.

DC's Convergence

They brought in editors specifically for Convergence. Originally, it was supposed to be Tom DeFalco, according to Bleeding Cool.

Now granted, I have no inside knowledge, so this is all speculation. I know that DC has moved several times within NYC with no disruption to the publishing schedule. However, those moves could be accomplished with the entire editorial staff intact. Plus, if you're just moving a few blocks, you can move one office at a time, and still work out of both offices for a while if need be. It seems like it would be a little more complicated trying to hodge podge your offices across two coasts.

I imagine moving across country is a lot more complicated. Many staff members did not make the move. Some of them were replaced, while other positions were reassigned or consolidated. It probably took a bit of a time to figure all of that out.

DC decided that the best option for themselves was to not burden themselves with the bulk of their normal publishing operation. But then they realized that they couldn't just disappear from shelves for two months. So, they hired some folks who could work on an event without the burden of moving. Also, the nature of the event was something that could be worked on at any time. So, either the event books could be worked on from a satellite location (or the old NYC offices as everyone else moved out), or they were worked on while all of the regular editors were handling their normal workloads for the February and March books.

This also gave the added benefit of giving many of the regular creators some time off and/or get ahead.

Some good may finally be coming from Convergence.

Titans Hunt #1 - "Convergence is over, but the ripples are still being felt, especially by a young precog named Lilith. What are these visions she's having of a Teen Titans team the world never knew? And why does she feel compelled to seek out Dick Grayson, Roy Harper, Donna Troy and an Atlantean named Garth and warn them that something dark and sinister is coming after them? Who are Mal, Gnarrk, Hank Hall and Dawn Granger, and what is their connection to the others--and to the fate of every soul on Earth? This is the Secret History of the Teen Titans!"
