This might appear to be over the top, but I thought it would be a nice tribute if we opened a discussion or a sticky or what-not for commemorating comic-book talent that has passed away. There have been some greats who have left us in recent years, and I'm thinking that some folks aren't aware of this... all of them are deserving of a thread where anyone and everyone could share their experiences with either his/her work or the individual themself. A quick bio to kick off their career would be fitting I would think.

Jack "King" Kirby, Dave Cockrum, Marshal Rogers, Gil Kane, Bill Everett, Wally Wood... the list is too long. I wish I had an update on Bill Mantlo.

Just having a cathartic moment.

This is from his Wikipedia page:

"Aparo died early on July 19, 2005. Some reports attributed the cause of death to 'a long battle with cancer', but his family's formal announcement (through his art agent Spencer Beck) attributed his death to 'complications relating to a recent illness' and the AP obituary reported that 'Aparo died Tuesday at home after a short illness, said his daughter, Donna Aparo.'"

STEVE GERBER (1947 - 2007)

An American comi-book writer best known for his sardonic wit and an uncanny ability to fuse social satire with the less-absurd sensibilities of a younger comic-book reading public. He was diagnosed with an early stage of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis in 2007. He continued to work, however, during his hospitalization, being on the waiting list for a transplant at UCLA Medical Center.

On February 10, 2008, he died from complications related to this condition. He is survived by his estranged wife and one daughter.

His passing is keenly felt by fans of absurdist humor, and his influence among other writers in the field, particularly the independent market, is unquestionable.

He is best known for his work with Marvel Comics' Howard the Duck, Man-Thing and THe Defenders throughout the 1970s, but Gerber's catalog of work expanded into other forms of media. Noteworthy examples germane to this format include episodes of the animated G.I. Joe, Dungeons and Dragons and Thundarr the Barbarian, the last of which he created.

He also wrote several stories for Creatures on the Loose, Chamber of Chills, and Journey Into Mystery, and some humor pieces for Crazy, leading to an editor position for that satirical magazine for a time.

His catalog of works include :

Marvel Comics

Man-Thing • Shanna the She-Devil • Sub-Mariner • Daredevil • Crazy Magazine • Tales of the Zombie • Supernatural Thrillers: N'Kantu, the Living Mummy • Marvel Two-in-One • Adventure into Fear: Morbius, the Living Vampire • Son of Satan • Lilith, Daughter of Dracula • Defenders • Howard the Duck • Omega the Unknown • Marvel Presents: Guardians of the Galaxy • Void Indigo • Avengers Spotlight: Hawkeye • The Sensational She-Hulk • Poison • Foolkiller • The Legion of Night

DC Comics

Metal Men • Mister Miracle • Weird War Tales • The Phantom Zone • Doctor Fate • Nevada • A. Bizarro • Superman: Last Son of Earth • Hard Time • Zauriel

TV/Media

Codename: Strykeforce • Cybernary • Destroyer Duck • Eclipse Magazine • Exiles • Sludge
Television work

Thundarr the Barbarian • Dungeons & Dragons • G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero • Mister T • The New Adventures of the Puppy • Star Trek: The Next Generation - Contagion • Superman: The Animated Series • The New Batman Adventures

Steven Hughes R.I.P.This is kind of old & taken from wikipedia but he definitely deserves some props too.

Steven Hughes was an African American artist for the Chaos! Comics company. Hughes provided the art for many of the company's comics, including Lady Death, Evil Ernie, and the short-lived superhero series Detonator . He also helped to create the signature look of these characters.

Inspired by EC comics such as Tales from the Crypt, and especially EC artist Wally Wood, he began as an artist for various titles from Aircel.

Recognition
Hughes was among the artists in Wizard's top 10 list in 1995 and his work was featured on the cover of the 75th issuse.

In 1995, Hughes' art joined the Next Step, a traveling art show that featured mainstream African American comic book artists. "Next Step" was produced by Boston-based artist Rob Stull.

Hughes was recognized in 1999, during the Black History Month celebration at the Words and Pictures Museum in Northampton, Massachusetts, where he was there to provide feedback, illustration techniques and sketches for fans.

Death
Steven Hughes died on February 18, 2000, in Scottsdale, Arizona, after a long battle with cancer. Hughes was survived by his wife Barbara Hughes and his children Amber, Chance and Samantha.

Been a fan for years and just read about his death in Newsarama this morning. In fact, was going to post a R.I.P. thread but saw this one and decided to check it first.
Nobody does a cover better than Dave!

Robert E. Howard

Born January 22, 1906
Peaster, Texas

Died June 11, 1936 (aged 30)
Cross Plains, Texas

Robert Ervin Howard (January 22, 1906 – June 11, 1936) was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. Howard wrote "over three-hundred stories and seven-hundred poems of raw power and unbridled emotion" and is especially noted for his memorable depictions of "a sombre universe of swashbuckling adventure and darkling horror."

He is well known for having created — in the pages of the legendary Depression-era pulp magazine Weird Tales — the character Conan the Cimmerian, a.k.a. Conan the Barbarian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can only be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Count Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond.

On the morning of June 11, 1936, told by a nurse that his mother would never again regain consciousness, he walked out to his car in the driveway, took a borrowed .38 automatic from the glove box, and shot himself in the head. His father and another doctor rushed out, but the wound was too grievous for anything to be done. Howard lived for another eight hours, dying at 4 p.m.; his mother died the following day. They were both buried on June 14, 1936 in a double funeral in Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, Texas.

Michael Layne Turner (April 21, 1971 – June 27, 2008)

Michael Turner was born in Crossville, Tennessee, on April 21, 1971. He was a student at the University of Tennessee. Shortly before graduating, he moved to Aspen, Colorado, then to San Diego California , where he taught martial arts. It was in San Diego that he developed an interest in comics.
Turner was discovered by Marc Silvestri at a convention, and hired by Silvestri's Top Cow Productions as an artist. He initially did background illustrations for Top Cow titles before co-creating Witchblade. In the summer of 1998 he debuted the creator-owned Fathom, having also worked on his new series Soulfire. As well as an artist, Turner was an award-winning water skier, held an instructor level red sash in martial arts , and was an avid video game player. In March 2000, Turner was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma, a form of cancer, in the right pelvis. He was treated at UCLA Medical Center with surgery in which he lost a hip, 40% of his pelvis, and three pounds of bone. The surgery was followed by nine months of radiation therapy.
Turner departed Top Cow in late 2002 to found his own comic book publishing company, Aspen MLT Inc. (where MLT stands for Michael Layne Turner), located in Santa Monica, with a studio in Marina del Rey, California. The release of comics from Aspen was delayed by a year-long lawsuit with Top Cow Productions over the rights to Fathom, and over the rights to the unreleased titles Soulfire (initially called Dragonfly) and Ekos, both of which Turner had begun development on before leaving Top Cow and before his diagnosis of cancer. Aspen and Top Cow settled the lawsuit out of court in 2003.
In 2004 Turner contributed covers to various DC Comics titles, including The Flash and Identity Crisis. He also provided cover art and co-wrote the "Godfall" story arc that ran in the three main Superman titles in early 2004. He also illustrated the six-issue "Supergirl from Krypton" story arc in Superman/Batman. His creator-owned title Soulfire also began publication in 2004, and Fathom resumed publication in that year as well, though this time with Aspen MLT rather than Top Cow.
On August 6, 2005, Marvel Comics announced the signing of Michael Turner to a work-for-hire deal for a six-issue project and covers. This would turn out to be at least the variant covers for the miniseries Civil War and the new Wolverine ongoing series Wolverine: Origins. In addition Turner had been announced as the artist on Ultimate Wolverine.
He created online comic adaptations for the NBC television series "Heroes".

               Death and tribute

Turner died June 27, 2008 at the Santa Monica Hospital in California, of complications from bone cancer.[ He is survived by his mother Grace Crick, his brother Jake Turner, and his fiancee Kelly Carmichael. Fathom (vol. 3) #1, which was published on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, featured a tribute to Turner in the form of a stylized blue ribbon in the upper right hand corner of its cover, and its first page was a memorial to him, including a photograph of him at his drawing board.
Michael Layne Turner (April 21, 1971 – June 27, 2008)

Michael Turner was born in Crossville, Tennessee, on April, 21, 1971, student at the University of Tennessee.

So much great talent has passed away from us and so few to call fair replacements for "The Greats" who've gone before them. I bought my first comic book in 1968 and I never realized then, as a kid, how much I was taking for granted then. It almost makes me sad for the current generation of comic book fans. You'll never truly know how good it was.
Steve Gerber, in particular, is coming to mind right now as he was one of our more recent losses. Mr. Gerber was a great and self-made master of the macabre with works like Howard The Duck, Omega and The Man-Thing to his credit. His wonderful weirdness and humor is sorely missed.
Come to think of it, once upon a time, you sure could buy one helluva lot of comic book for only .15 to .50 cents a month. And it was most of the guys on that list who made it all happen (every 30 days). It's tragic and even cruelly ironic that some of them died as financially poor men. Surely, creators of their ilk may never come our way again.

In some ways, I think Steve Gerber was the most talented writer in the business. Certainly at the time. Not that today's writers do not employ satire (it's pretty chic to do it in most every independent mag I've come across), but Gerber was the first to do it with any real success. And he was a MASTER at it.

FRANK FRAZETTA (1928 - 2010)

"Perhaps best known for his illustrations on the covers of the 1970s Conan paperbacks for Lancer Books and the 1960s Warren Magazines (Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Blazing Combat), Frazetta worked closely with EC artists Al Williamson and Angelo Torres as well as on various solo efforts for that and other publishers. He worked on The Shining Knight for DC Comics and the oft-reprinted jungle feature Thun'da created by Gardner Fox.

Frazetta spent years as Al Capp's assistant – often, ghost – on the newspaper strip Lil Abner at the height of its popularity, where he first visualized the astonishingly sexy character Moonbeam McSwine. He went on to draw his own short-lived newspaper comic strip, Johnny Comet, and served as an assistant to Harvey Kurtzman and Will Elder on Playboy's Little Annie Fanny. Kurtzman once referred to Frank as "drawing sexy muscles in places where women don't ordinarily have muscles."

Generally regarded as one of the premiere illustrators of the latter half of the 20th Century, Frank Frazetta's work has been gathered in numerous collections and calendars. His work continues to be licensed for poster reproduction and for adaptation into comic books."*

Not a comics personality per se but he was the voice of Robin on Superfriends, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, several Transformers from the 1980's series and many more that you might be surprised about. Here is a partial list of cartoons he did voice work for.

Batman/Superman Hour
Skyhawks
Hot Wheels
Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?
Josie and the Pussycats
Hong Kong Fooey
Laff-a-lympics
Battle of the Planets
Transformers
2 Stupid Dogs
Captain Planet and the Planeteers
Johnny Bravo
Blue's Clues
and way too many more for me to list.

Like, wow, he will always and forever be the voice of Shaggy.

Surprised to not have seen this on here since it is abit old news by now.
However.....
The world lost a great man this year in Herb Trimpe. Herb was co-responsible for one of the most popular characters in comicdom. Wolverine. While Wolverine is by far his most famous creation Herb Trimpe was also the talented hand of other such titles as Godzilla, G.I. Joe and Shogun Warriors. This past year at Baltimore ComicCon I got the Chance to sit with him for a few minutes as he worked on a sketch for me and talk to him about his past and creations. While I can not speak for other on here I feel that he was one of the great artist ofbthe medium and a truly genuine man not one to shy away from his beliefs while also quick to give praise to other creators whom he has worked with.It is also worth noting that his wife is one of the nicest people ever and our thoughts are with her. We can only hope that a man who has provided so many of us with a chance at happiness in the form of a comic, can get happiness himself in his final sleep.
RIP HERB TRIMPE.

Not Really a Comic Passing However someone who’s contributions to film will be remembered forever.

June 7th 2015 we lost the Great Actor Christopher Lee due to respiratory and heart failure he was 93 years old. If the names doesn’t sound familiar to you then the characters he played will. Perhaps best known for his roles in Star Wars as Count Dooku and the Lord of The Rings series as Saruman the White Wizard. His Career goes back much further than those having also played 007 villain Francisco Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun and Dracula in 1958. It is also worth noting his military career as he served in the Royal Air foce during WWII.
Rip.
