I personally have not purchased from Metropolis, either. However, I took a peak at their seller ratings and see quite a few return purchases from buyers, including Joe himself! This speaks well of their product and service. Based on many commments here on the bulletin boards, I don't think alot of the buyers here are CGC fans. Most are active 'readers'. That may explain the lack of response to your original questions...

Hi. Yes, I don't need to be a member here for any amount of time to say what I feel. I'm not insulting anyone. Thanks for answering. Now, let me tell you that I have developed a report card on the various dealers that I buy from. What they stated the grade was and what it wound up being after coming back from CGC. When I get the comic from the dealer, I grade it myself, and my grading is just like CGC. Unfortunately, the dealers are not on the same page. What I really don't like is that.. when CGC first started, and I was one of the first to try out their new service, you could buy raw books for a normal price. Meaning... Overstreet. Now, the dealers price the comics AS IF they were already CGC graded, but the reality is that when you get them back from CGC they are a full grade lower, so now the dealers are really getting over. Which is why I wondered if any of you have had success with someone who is upstanding and trustworthy in their grading.

I assume you're talking about Metropolis Comics in NYC and not METROPOLIS CONNECTIONS here on the site. I've dealt with Metropolis Comics before and find their grading is pretty good, perhaps about a half grade high. I've also met the owner and dealt with him at shows and I find him to be a bit obnoxious. Given a choice I deal with someone else. As for CGC I don't think their grading is accurate and I don't think their high realized prices will last. Eventually buyers will come to understand that a VF book is VF whether it's surrounded by hard plastic or not.

As to your other remarks that weren't too well received, keep in mind this is a forum, not a chat room. Just because you're reading this doesn't mean anyone else is. We can be a great family and friends and will gladly welcome you, but we can be equally great enemies if that's what you're looking for. You can't just abruptly and totally change the topic of a thread like that, especially when you've already asked this exact question in another forum section.

So far you have not made a very good first impression on here in my honest opinion.

You're obviously in your late 40's or early 50's if you grew up in the 60's.. so all that life/comic book experience could definitely be well respected on here. We are all friends and peers. I hope you like it here, but please.. take the time to learn how a forum and its structure work.

Hi funnygreengoblin hope this evening finds you well.I have indeed dealt with Metropolis in NY,and also have sent the comics I have purchased to be graded by CGC.I had bought an Amazing Spider-man #31 from them and they said NM- or 9.0 but it came back from CGC as a 8.5 VF+,but I also purchased a Werewolf by night #32(1st moon knight) in NM- raw and it came back as a 9.4.All in all they are a very reputable company,It just seems that they do charge some high prices for their books that you could otherwise find cheaper elsewhere.I hope my input helped you in some way.I on the other hand would like to ask you why would you want to be so rude on these boards,we are always going to help you if you have problems etc.,but to attack us in such a way is not recommended. That old saying "you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar" really holds up here.Alot of us have been here in CCL since it's inception and we are close like family here, and yes I feel that I have found alot of friends that I can just talk about anything to,so sarcasm is just going to put us on the defensive. We will get to your questions, but please be patient.

I never was putting down Metropolis Comics.. that is the first place I look for my books. I was wondering and found the answers to my questions on their grading. I have just not had the pleasant JACKPOT experience of having one graded higher or even THE SAME as advertised and when I do.. I'm coming on here and I will praise them to the hilt. In fact, in the next week or two, there are 3 chances for that to happen.... as I have 3 comics coming back from CGC that I purchased from them. I look forward to opening the box

CGCing new books, that's the sure way you get rich!!! Then buying vintage books at a premium and waiting to turn them over for a profit when the prices fluctuate so much, talk about risky. His poor kid would be so much better off with a trust that's invested in a simple Money Market, or if he wanted to take a chance, some high risk high yield stocks instead of the crapshoot that is CGC. Millions are only made by the Megastores that have a staff, online presence and multiple stores who buy and sell in bulk internationally, not by the individual seller. With the money he's spending on buying the books, both vintage and new (and don't forget the duplicate reading copies) and submitting them to CGC, he could just buy a few key Golden Age books and have a better chance at making money selling those. Of course, tying up your money in comics is risky enough with the damage they could suffer via a flood or fire or even improper storage. And the jury's still out on if the CGC cases actually protect the comics over time or do, in fact, hurt them.

I'm still confused though, what's a comic?

I showed my friend who's a banker goblin's website and he started laughing. The charts he has are "a load of crap". Basically the Depth chart is just a Price Guide excerpt that's way out of date and it's not accurate as it assumes that there's some kind of constant formula with regards to price increases that applies to every book over a set amount of time. His other chart on the main page is simply a list of numbers that he's multiplied by two with no basis in anything other than his dream. It's like saying I have 4 dollars and I'm going to turn it into 4 million dollars simply cause I say so. Then when you get to his financial plan, that's where the true magic happens. Basically he's bought a bunch of books and is just sitting on them. He sold two books for what he claims is a hundred percent profit and advertises this fact neglecting to offset that profit with all of the books he's lost money on. Couple that with the fact that he probably has a ton more books that he hasn't sold yet, a ton more he's buying in the $5.00 to $100 range and the fact that he technically will have to pay taxes on his earnings and/or register as a business if he's going to be achieving profits in the tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions since obviously he's not dealing in cash, and then factor in the costs to CGC all of his books, well it just looks bleak for him. And then when you factor in he's in his 50's, well time is running out for him to make huge profits on the pile of cases he's sitting on. His website isn't even professional looking, is incomplete and cuts itself off in multiple places, and, with his cranky self righteous attitude, I don't think he's going to establish himself among the world of dealers which is a vital part of being one.

Now had this guy come here being nice I bet we all could have helped him to make his business grow. But like Cavy said, I'm certainly not going to buy from him either.

It doesn't look like he includes those costs. Also, if he sold them on Ebay, he would have had more fees that would have taken a chunk out of his profit.

Hey Fate, when you and your new buddy get rich making your millions from CGCing your quarter bin purchases, I hope you'll take a second and look down on all us unintelligent apes who actually read comics for the artwork, the stories and most importantly, for fun and donate all of your reading copies to us. That is, of course, if you're not too busy counting all your money... oh wait, you'll probably hire someone to do that. I'll send you my resume.

Make sure to tell your vendors that they should give you a huge discount off cover price on new books if they're 9.6 or less as those grades are worthless. Tell them you're actually doing their business a favor by taking such worthless crap off their shelves for even half cover price. And if you do plan on purchasing any new books, make sure to bring a metahuman, mutant and/or magician with you who has the power to levitate the book out of the box (do NOT buy from the rack, ask for a copy that's still in the shipping box), straight into a bag and board (Mylars and acid free don't forget) where the whole package can be teleported directly to CGC for grading. Not sure how much it costs to rent such help as I hear on new book day they jack up their prices, but hopefully it won't offset your profits too much. 1 Million dollars here I come! Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life, or for your topic switchers, "A BRAND NEW DAY"!

I have bought several comics from Metropolis, One of the very first comics that I purchased from them was a Uncanny X-Men 143 graded by them as a 9.8, When I received it, I was very disappointed and personnlay graded it much lower, I called them up and kind of bitched, they offered to let me return the book. I decided not to, I was a little naive and timid about that back then, and sent it into CGC, it came back 9.0. I must say my other purchases have been nearly spot on though, .5 off, one way or the other.

Let's see what good ol'FGG's been up too these days:
Friday, May 23, 2008- It was a good thing I drove to work because the U.S. Attorney decided to let us all leave at
3:00. That was fine with me. On the way home I had to stop to Meijer and the meat market to get stuff to cook for
dinner.
Saturday, May 24- I slept in and read Spidey annual 3 (part of it) took a shower, got dressed and got on with the
day.
Sunday, May 25- I woke up at around 7:30 this morning and I was hungry. So, I got dressed and went up to
McDonald's and got a #12 (steak and egg bagel), ate it while watching sports center with the sound down, then went
back to sleep. SInce Lynn can't eat anything sold, I cooked some rice hamburger helper for her, then 2 others for me
to eat later in the night. During the day I figured out how to listen to the radio station in the UK, featuring their Top 40
(which is good music, not stupid hip hop and rap shit). After Lynn left for work, I was tired so I went to bed early and
ate a bunch.
Monday, May 26- MEMORIAL DAY which meant a day off for me. The weekend had been good but it was going by
too quickly. Part of my plan for today was to work on my comics as well as the usual taking out the trash, cleaning,
cooking and all that jazz. Unfortunately, I did all the other stuff first, then ran out of time for my comics. That was a
bummer. I immediately got into a bad mood thinking about having to go back to work tomorrow. Then the stupid
dancing show as on and I got even crabbier.
Tuesday, May 27- I got home at 5:30 and Lynn's mom was already there for the weekly bingo extravaganza. Not
much time for small talk as they left almost immediately after I got there. Tonight Karen arrived for a visit, staying at
Lynn's mom's place. I didn't see her, but Lynn got a chance to visit with her briefly after the bingo. I spent my night
cooking like crazy, using up shrimp. I made shrimp stir-fry and then shrimp and angel hair. I had none of that as I ate
left over spaghetti and meatballs. I think I'll take some shrimp to work tomorrow for lunch? Oh yeah. Another high
point of the night was that I received my order today featuring Alpha Flight #2 and #9 both CGC 9.8 (white pages). (Woohoo, you're inching closer and closer to that big million my friend... considering those issues are worth about 5-10 dollars a piece CGC'd)
Wednesday, May 28- Today was Lynn's dentist appointment. But Brian was going to Cedar Point today so I had to
wake Lynn up before I left for work to have her ride with me to the bus stop so she could take the car home and have it
for her dentist appointment later in the afternoon. At work, I finished all my packing of files and stuff because tomorrow
I move into my new office on the other side of the building. Apparently Lynn had a rough time at the dentist. Her
appointment was for 2:30, and she was just arriving at the bus stop shortly before I got there. They had to drain this
cyst deal, then stitch it up, then look at it, insert a drain device and whatever. So Friday she goes back and then
Monday or Tuesday for the swishing out of the root canal which will cost $600.00. Oh well. (Damn, that tooth just ate up all your profit from the last 2 years. Bummer indeed) Since she was called in to
work tonight we didn't have much time so I rushed into Meijer to get some bird seed and also some frozen food for my
dinner tonight. We got home at 5:30 and Lynn got ready for work and was gone by 5:40. Shortly after she left Brian
called me from Cedar Point to tell me he was having a good time. My night was spent doing dishes and cleaning up.
Then, Jenene called and it was nice to talk to her for a while. I resumed dishes and then Brian called again. Time was
going quickly as it was 8:22. I got my food together and went to bed at around 9:30, watching the Piston game as I
ate. Tomorrow I will drive to work so that I can get off early and go grocery shopping for the night.

I like that he bases his profit on what he thinks the book is worth, and not what it actually sold for. Someone should explain to him that until it actually sells there's no profit. He also isn't taking into consideration his costs (shipping, CGC etc.)

And his charts.... Basically anyone who uses them is instantly rich. He's taking all of the Overstreet Values and treating them like givens. Stupid because Overstreet lists every book as being worth at least Cover Price. I'm sure no one here has every seen a book sell for less than Cover. Guess I should just buy that longbox full of Adventures of Superman #500 White Bagged Edition at $1.00 each since the Cover Price is $2.95. That's 195% profit!

Hi

For what it is worth, I bought 2 golden age books from metropolis, sent them both in to be graded, each came back 1/2 grade lower than what the grade i bought them at.

Most dealers will not guarentee their grade against CGC and 1/2 grade is within reason, though it can be disappointing to have an 8.0 come back 7.5.

In my experience I am more gun shy about online sellers claiming NM/MT or MT and ending up with VF+ or NM- that are not worth the price of shipping back. Always checking feedback is an important skill to learn.

Metropolis and their grading

I've bought from Metropolis on a few occasions. Overall, I don't really like how they conduct their business, so I don't frequent them often. My main problems have been attitudes given to me by sales staff, and their whole "Make An Offer" option, which they might as well not have. One time I was shopping a $200 book and made an offer of $185. They countered with an offer of $199.50. I mean, why bother? I was just insulted by that for some reason, like it was a slap in the face. Then to add insult to injury, the book was on sale for 5% off two weeks later.

But on the times I have done business with them, I feel the books were accurately graded within reason. Delivery was a little slow, but well packaged.

As for comparing to CGC, I don't think you can say any dealer's grade will compare to CGC's grade on any single issue. Not that you can bank on with certainty. I've submitted many Silver and Bronze age books to CGC and there is always a grade that seems to make no sense with each submission. I've sent books that I thought were a slam-dunk 8.5 or 9.0, and get a 7.5 back because of some defect you can only see if you hold it at a certain angle, under certain lighting, and look with a magnifying glass. Then I will get grader notes and find that one grader gave it a 6.0, and two gave it an 8.5, with all three only noting the same defect. So instead of dismissing the 6.0, it somehow gets a 7.5 (average I guess). Or sometimes I will submit a book that in no way would I ever sell as more than an 8.5 and it will come back with a 9.2 or 9.4. I'll post scans of it on the collector's society forums, and they will all agree that there is no way it is a 9.2 or 9.4 (a "gift" grade) because of an obvious defect that somehow all the graders missed (no mention of it in the notes).

I'm not convinced that CGC can even grade the same book twice better than +/- one grade range. They also admit that they grade on a curve for Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Modern. So you can have a 8.5 Gold that looks worse than an 8.5 Silver, which looks worse than an 8.5 Bronze, which looks worse than an 8.5 modern. And some books may actually be Silver, but because they are more abundant, the Bronze curve is applied. Or if they are very rare, the Gold curve may apply. Plus there are other "curves" used. It makes it impossible to determine how a dealer's grades will stack up against CGC.

Supposedly it is cost by book value because it costs them more to insure your book while on their premises and during return shipping. So they can't charge a flat rate because their carry costs are much more on a $10,000 book vs a $10 book.

I don't totally buy that. I know insurance rates on the return shipping do cost more as the price of the book goes up. So I buy that part.

I don't buy the part about on premise storage costs. I'm sure they have a $10 million policy or something like that and pay a fixed rate per year. I'm sure their coverage doesn't fluctuate as comics go in and out, because it would be a book keeping nightmare for the insurance company.

I also think the argument falls apart when you look at price difference for Modern vs Bronze. If I submit a $100 book from 1975 vs a $100 book from 1980, there is nothing to justify a $15 price hike, other than they can.
Actually, I'm PROUD of dealers for pricing raw books the same price as their CGC counterparts. The grade and case DO NOT make the comic more valuable. As far as the comic coming back a grade lower, grading standards have always changed and I think CGC grading is out of line anyway. It fluctuates according to their whim. I've seen the CGC give books with ugly spine creases a 9.4, and other times give nicer looking books an 8.5. I've seen them give a water damaged book a high grade because it came from a pedigree lot. Their grading is just as subjective as anyone else's grade. I really look forward to the day when it costs them too much to grade a book and they just go away.

My experiences with them have been pretty much the same. The "Click Here To Inquire" button might as well be labeled "Bait a Sucker". Not only did they initially fail to response to my inquiry on one book after 3 months, they priced it three times more than I'd pay for it in ANY condition when they finally did quote a price. I had to complain about their service to get a quote at all. I was very pleased about the grading and price on the things I did buy. I was annoyed they made me sign for a comic delivery. I had to take off a day from work to wait on a comic book. It pissed me off. That's the main reason I am not buying from them anymore.
]HI GANG!

IT FEELS LIKE...STARTING OVER

I'm actually starting over with my collection, and starting to enjoy comics again.
I had lost everything I liked about comics from trying to be a dealer, to grading my
comics, to looking at them as money rather than as something I enjoy reading.
So now, I am at the bare bottom of my collection, as I once was, and am doing it
the way I enjoy, not how someone else says it should be or for the money. Now
it's like it was when I was a kid, just for reading.. but I still have to have top notch
condition comics. I just refuse to grade them.
Yes, I bought my mylites, and my mylars. My collection will now be purely mint
copies that look great in those sleeves. No more CGC, PGX, or whatever. I don't
trust some idiot to grade a comic. Why is his opinion better than mine? I'm
wasting $30.00 (more or less) a pop on their opinion, rather then buying high
grade copies for my collection. And, by the way, the comics look MUCH BETTER
in a mylar than a stupid CGC case any day.
I broke out all my comics and will buy comics online and also at shows that
are CGC or PGX, but when I get home, they are being set free and I will put them
in mylar. Also, no more reading copies for me. Why waste the money. I will read
my high-grade copies (I've been collecting for 44 years, so I think I can hold a
comic without damaging it). Yes folks, enough is enough. I'm not selling my
comics anymore, so what I have is mine and my knowledge of grading is just as
good or better than CGC. I wish more people would feel like this and let's see an
end to the comic grading scam.
I was one of the first people who had a comic graded by CGC. It was 2000 and
I thought that it was a really interesting idea. It is.. the restoration check is good.
But, hey... I'm not losing that. Because, I am going to pop the stuff out of the
container, evaluate it myself, then grade it accordingly. I am truly starting over
with my collection and I am really enjoying my comic collection again.. finally.

It was this whole "fail proof" plan of buying certain books at specific prices, and then reselling them once they were graded, or trading them for raw copies of books that could then be graded and the process repeated. In this fail proof plan, you started with a $5 book and ended up with an Action #1... sounds legit.

You know, from time to time I still pop back here and look up good old funnygreengoblin to see what he's been up to.

I am truly sad to come in here today and inform you guys that FGG, aka Brian Maton, has passed away recently.

If my google researching is correct ('cause his website is down now), he died on September 24, 2011. He was 52 years old at the time.
He leaves behind his wife, Lynn Marie Maton and his son, Brian Maton Jr.

I'm locking this thread in respect.
