"Champion"
Triangle 1994-8. Continued from Adventures of Superman (1987) #509 and continues in Superman: The Man of Steel #31.
Frustrated at being lost in deep space and no longer being in control of his rapidly growing powers, Superman almost fails to notice the planet he's passing is similar to Earth. His investigation of the planet alerts its defense systems, which in turn awaken the protector known as Champion. An inability to communicate leads to a violent misunderstanding.
Lois is very close to the truth behind Sasha Green's disappearance and boldly confronts Luthor about his involvement with the mystery.
As Superman battles Champion, the planetary defenses analyze the Man of Steel and discover his Kryptonian heritage and true intentions. Champion is enthralled in the battle and can only be stopped by a beam from the defenses which puts him to sleep so the system can provide Kal-El with the coordinates of a nearby wormhole which will take him to the outer rim of the Milky Way and much closer to Earth.
Distracted by the rigors of hyperspace travel, Superman doesn't realize that the asteroid with Doomsday passes him in the wormhole.
