Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth 4-A

"The Devil's Arena"

Kamandi is scavenging for supplies with Ben Boxer and Steve when they are attacked by tigers. They nearly escape when the gorillas arrive to defend their territory, but they all end up captives of the gorillas. In captivity, and separated from his friends, Kamandi escapes into the ventilation system and finds the cell of Tuftan, one of the tigers who attacked and the son of Caesar, the tiger king. Kamandi impresses Tuftan with his intelligence, but Tuftan is unwilling to join in an escape attempt. As it turns out, it's a ploy so when Caesar attacks the gorilla fortress, Tuftan is able to move unimpeded to the hangar, where he plans to seize a fighter plane that survived the Great Disaster. Kamandi earns his enmity by destroying the plane rather than see it fall into Caesar's hands.
