Happy new year all! I was thinking about my large dvd collection and since with the whole evolution of technology nowadays i have a question to ask.
Do you all think it would be good to back up all the dvds to my hard drive? Then play them from it for now on? I was thinking about trading them into this store here in the uk thats gives cash or in store credit.
Or would it be a waste of time and money? Downsizing is important in ways as you all know how life works as you get older what with university, moving out etc.

do you normally watch movies on your PC? if not, would it be easy to connect your PC/laptop/hard drive to your TV? if "no" to either, don't do it - you'll just get frustrated. It doesn't matter if it's 50 Cents or 50 Dollars - if you list it as NM it better be NM.Xylob's Most Wanted: G.I.Joe Special Missions TPB 2 Tales from the Transformers Beast Wars: Critical Mass Transformers: Timelines #3 - either cover, no preference. Problems with CCL? 615-264-4747 Offices are open M-F 8am-5pm Central Time. Let me start by saying that I'm kind tech-ignorant so I may not know all the correct terms, but here we go:
A friend of mine decided to do just what you're thinking. He converted his entire DVD collection to digital copies. It's been time consuming. He's been working on it for 3+ months. He decided to put everything in iTunes because he has Apple TV, Roku, Slingbox, iPad...basically he can access his collection from just about anywhere.
I know he's had to purchase multiple TB external hard-drives to make it all work, but he likes that sort of thing.
It could get a little costly and is definitely time consuming but if you're willing to put the work in it can be done.

If you copy all your DVD to your computer and then sell the DVD what do you do when your computer crashes? Wouldn't you lose everything?

WTF? Glad I don't have any apple products... it takes me about 10 minutes to copy a DVD onto my HDD - no conversion, full size files. That's on a PC pushing 10+ years - that's ancient for a PC! I've got a rather large DVD collection and there's no way it would take me 3 months to get it all onto hard drives. Even if I stripped out all the b.s. extras, subtitles, and foreign audio to just get the movie. Also, if you're paying more than $0.50 per GB on a HDD you're getting screwed. Pat, put 'em on an external drive and then it doesn't matter if your 'puter dies, you can use it on any machine. My timeframe may be off. He's probably finished with it now. But yeah, his collection is rather extensive as well from what I understand. He was ripping movies as well as full seasons of television shows.
Sounds like more of an undertaking than I have time, resources or knowledge to get into. Still, it would be kind of cool to anywhere access to my DVDs.

Its interesting in terms of trying to get all the files sorted and stuff but you all know as said the time consumtion. But that being said i think if i use the proper programes and atuff it will pay off in the end. Also by if i can find out how to condense the sizes of fes down that will make it fit better onto the hdd. Trying to keep the quality of course too.

yeah, the right software is key plenty of RAM and a fast ripping drive help too - burners tend to be slower. Personally I wouldn't go through the trouble. Find yourself a compact DVD case/organizer and get rid of the DVD jewel cases and sleeves. The reason I wouldn't go through the trouble of ripping them is that you'll never get more than Standard definition files anyway (DVD native resolution is 420p... barf! It's not like they won't be watchable, but I just wouldn't waste the time it would take to do it.
