Ok, so I have some Thor books and they all have "Pastime 25ct Comics" in an ink stamp on the cover, pretty decent shape if not for this stamp, what does a stamp on the cover do to the grade, what's the highest grade they can have with the stamp?...lets say for example it's a VF book without the stamp, what should the stamp now lower the grade to?

Typically a Near Mint book would drop to Fine with a cover stamp, unless its a date or Army Star stamp then would probably be VF. So you are probably looking at a Very Good.

Actually if it's a store stamp those are part of the distribution process & can be allowed up to fairly high grade, is it a little nickel sized stamp or more the size of an address label? I'm guessing yours is big enough that I probably wouldn't go over FVF. If someone say, stamps their signature on the front it's treated as wear & tear and graded lower.

That's a flaw I'd disclose in the notes, at least if you're going over FN anyway. CCL needs an indicator for added notes in the next version, hopefully we'll get it.

Overall just keep in mind that there's no harm in grading safe since you get to set the price.

PS - shop around for an out-of-date grading guide at Amazon, sometimes you can find one for a couple bucks.

Yeah, thanks for the advice, even though I hate it will prob call them vf and list the stamp in the notes...would rather grade too low than too high....and it's not like they are super old or major keys or anything just some 70's thors... Thanks again

This is actually pretty similar to distributor striping in the 70's where they spray painted the edges so that they could identify which stacks were which in a warehouse. If a little bit bleeds over the edge it's fine in high grade, if it runs down along the spine edge then you have to start making a judgement call because somebody buying a high grade book probably won't like it.

Naturally if you or I go spray painting our books - instant beater. Different situation, same grading principles.

Sorry, totally meant to say I would call them VG and list the stamp in the notes, not VF...
