I picked up several comics yesterday. Most are probably not of particular interest here, but I want to mention one:

Marvels book four of four, newsstand edition

I didn't even know until Thundercron pointed it out recently, that this title was NOT a direct-only title. And if he hadn't pointed it out, I probably wouldn't have asked the dealer if I could look at the comic without its bag & backing board, wouldn't have known it was newsstand, wouldn't have bought it.

It's an event that makes me really happy about the newsstand/direct discussions that have taken place here. I have learned so much here. Thanks to everyone who has made positive contributions to the discussions.

Had the fortunate opportunity to attend a Superman 75th anniversary celebration at Carol & John's Comic Shop in Cleveland, plus a quick stop at another shop. Here are some of my fun finds . . .

Action Comics #844 & #901 (1938, 1:10 variants, NM) $1.00 each
Avengers #31 (2010, Susan G. Komen variant, NM) $1.00
Avengers vs. X-Men #10 (X-Men team variant, NM) $1.00
Game of Thrones #7 & #8 (VF) $1.00 each
Indestructible Hulk #9 (1:20 variant, NM) $3.99
Suicide Risk #1 (VF) $1.00
Superman #675 (1939, 1:10 variant, NM) $1.00
Teen Titans #22 (2011, 1:25 variant, NM) $2.99
Thor: God of Thunder #2 (NM) $1.00

. . . and my personal favorites from these stops:

Helheim #1 (B&W preview, NM) $1.00

. . . and I picked-up one of these fun coins as part of the Superman anniversary celebration! I received one for donating $25 to the Cleveland Courage Fund.

Now you only need #1-3....!!Laughing

And thanks to the discussions here, I always second guess myself needlessly whenever I pull books to ship and notice they are newsstand editions....

I picked up a coverless Superman (1939) #6 recently, was pretty happy to get that even though it's coverless.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome to have anything from the Golden Age that's authentic and not a reprint, especially Superman.

A friend of mine runs a local auction, this is not the type of high class auction that you see on these tv shows this is a very raw country auction, but occasionally I find some good stuff. I have only bought comics there once before and came away with Warlock #1, Silver Surfer # 2, and a bunch of 12 cent DC stuff, mostly Action and Adventure comics.

So anyways he calls me up Friday before the auction and says a guy has 4 long boxes of stuff and he will take $130 for them. He isn't versed in comics, he of course said they were old, and they were most of them over 30 years old, lol.

But the condition is pretty shoddy, I mean if you just look at the covers alone, I would say the majority of the stuff would be F or better, but because the general mildew smell and the staples are awful, They can only qualify as readers, and some of them are actually wormridden, lol, I mean there are parts of the bottom of the books that are actually eaten away slightly. Of course after seeing them I would have like to have backed out, but like I said, he is a friend, and he had already come out of his pocket to pay the other guy. So I now am the proud owner of 4 boxes of mildew smelling junk, haha.

The only plus side is there are some really nice long runs of some DC titles, (mostly 1980's stuff), but some nice runs of some books I don't have a lot of experience with. Like Jemm Son of Saturn, Captain Atom, etc. Pretty nice stacks of Detective, Batman, and a crap ton of Archie books from this era.

So I added probably 1200 issues to my collection, Yay for me. haha
