War Comics aren't for everyone.

But if you are a fan, then you have numerous options.

DC has done a pretty good job over the years with publishing this genre as well as frequently updating their characters and titles. Some of the earliest comic books I read were DC war comics and they had a definite influence on my young mind. I have my favorites, what are yours?

Sgt. Rock

Gritty combat action with recurring characters which made you care a little more for their welfare. People died and it wasn't always pretty. A very powerful series and a lot of thoughtful stories.

Enemy Ace

One of the first features to headline an "anti-hero". Very cool story lines, great art and heartbreaking pathos at times.

Haunted Tank

World war II Tank Captain communes with the ghost of a Civil War General. Why hasn't this been made into a movie yet?!

Weird War Tales

So many things were great about this series. The stand-alone segments were usually creepy and disturbing and the recurring characters G.I Robot and the Creature Commandos were excellently depicted.

Blackhawk

Almost super-heroic at times, the adventures of the Blackhawk Squadron were exciting, outrageous and iconic. The Howard Chaykin series was quite exceptional.

Unknown Soldier

Pretty bizarre individual and the stories are as well. It must be tough when your face has been blown off.

Army @ Love

Apparently based on some current/recent war somewhere in Central Asia. Good read.

The Losers

Short-lived (hah!) super group of WWII heroes. Each had their own adventures before banding together to fight against America's enemies.

There are certainly more. Please elucidate.

As a kid I remember reading SGT Rock at my aunts. She had a really odd stack of books, tons of 60-70's archies, audrey, richie rich etc. A few DC/Marvel superhero titles then a smaller pile of westerns and SGT Rock.

used to love reading them all

I voted Sgt. Rock, but honestly, I've read very little of this genre. I'd probably love Weird War Tales though!

It's a tough choice, but I'll have to go with Rock over Enemey Ace....

Just recently been reading some Showcase Presents reprints of Enemy Ace and The Haunted Tank and The War That Time Forgot. I like them all. I'd say Enemy Ace has been my favorite. I had a few Sgt. Rock comics growing up and enjoyed them as well. This could be bad. I may get sucked into collecting runs of all these books D'oh
