I think that is only for the 50th Anniversary episode. At the end of season 7 as the episode draws to a close Smith's 11th Doctor sheds some light on things. There is speculation that Hurt's version of the Dr. is the one that ended the time war.

Here is the ending to season 7.

Hurt is and is not the Doctor..which is just more Doctor Who mind humping. It is possible that he comes before the "9th" Doctor.

Ah ok. Man that would be awesome though. I dig John hurt. He'd make a great doctor. I sort if wish they'd have an epic run with someone like they did with Tom baker.

The 8th Doctor was Paul McGann. John Hurt is The Doctor before he became The Doctor. I liked Matt Smith as The Doctor, he was fun and Bow Ties are cool! David Tennant will always be my favorite Doctor though. On a side note that means that IDW will be starting the Doctor Who series over at number one again.... such a pain in the rump!Wall

Eh, I had fun, let's see how Matt Smith exits. I hope it will be as graceful as his entry.

BBC/England are progressive but we'll never see a girl doctor, we'll see a gay doctor before we see a woman.

I suppose it's open to interpretation, but my understanding of the last episode this season was that the Hurt Doctor came in between 8 and 9--at some point during the time war--because the Doctor had to do things in the war that were so against his nature that he couldn't take the name of the Doctor.

I don't think it's about being progressive, but rather it doesn't serve the character of the Doctor for him to be a woman. It would just be one big farce that they couldn't keep up. Fine for one episode with Catherine Tate, but not something that can be sustained over a whole year. If anything it would set back the cause of female empowerment rather than advance it.

The story of the Doctor is about one man. He may have many faces and different personalities, but he's essentially the same guy. I could see it as some sort of learning exercise for his character to be a woman and feel what it's like to be at the opposite end of things. But the Doctor is really an old Peter Pan who can't settle down with any Wendy. That's one of his problems. And the show isn't about solving the problems of his character. He's meant to be flawed.

Sad to see Matt Smith go, because it means even less episodes of DOCTOR WHO next year. I just want them to solve their cast and production problems and start cranking out episodes on a regular basis. Is it too much to hope for 26 episodes a season?

It's been a long time since an older actor played the Doctor--maybe that's the way to go.
