I dunno. In recent years Affleck has shown he has the chops to be a pretty fair Bats. I mean, ignore a lot of his early "money grabbing" work, post Good will Hunting, and the guy has put together a pretty decent resume.
I mean....noone liked Michael keaton or Christian Bale as batman either when they were first announced...and look now.
Totally agree with this. People hated on Michael Keaton as Batman, Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man. Keaton was primarily known as a funny man, Evans had so perfectly nailed his role as Johnny Storm that nobody thought he could portray the serious-minded Cap (not to mention his youngish-looks), and Downey, Jr....well...even though he had some great performances in films like Chaplain and Zodiac, he was still living with the stigma of being Hollywood's token recovering drug addict.
What fans don't give these guys credit for (including Affleck), is that they are ACTORS. They ACT. That's what they do. Usually that means being able to portray a variety of different emotions through a variety of different types of characters. So we shouldn't have been surprised when Keaton didn't act like Mr. Mom as Batman, or Evans didn't act like Johnny Storm as Captain America, and Downey Jr., well, he wasn't on drugs when he did Iron Man.
People are judging Affleck on a few bad movies he did over ten years ago. If you look at his casting as Batman through the prism of what he's done in the last five or seven years or so (both as an actor and a director), everyone should be elated. Stop automatically deciding the movie's gonna suck before a single frame has been shot.
There's also a little more to this casting choice than meets the eye. After the Supes/Batman movie was announced, the big question was who would direct the inevitable Batman spin-off solo movie. Surely whoever directs would want a hand in casting and molding the character in anticipation of the upcoming spin off movie. Ben Affleck is Warner Brother's Golden Boy right now. If all goes well, you can bet Affleck will be directing himself in the Batman solo film.
