Shop at My Store
I have been seeing more and more spam attacks lately, at least one a day. This morning it looks like there were five or more! They were deleted pretty fast (Pat?) and thanks for that.

My question is: Can something be done to stop these before they hit the boards and, if so, is something being done?

I'm not placing the blame on anyone here, the fault obviously lies with the jerks sending the spam. I personally don't know enough to suggest a remedy. Does anyone have an idea about how to stop this?

Yes, I got rid of 6 today from 4 different users. It seems many of these are coming from India (yahoo.com.in email) I asked Steve if we could ban the IP addresses from that part of the world (it can be done) and I was basically told that spam is part of doing business and there was nothing going to be done about. If I can catch them in the act I can get their IP address and ban it, but beyond that I'm about useless.

The following stores are all stores that I've dealt with or have become friends with through the forums and I highly recommend them all.

Well I hope we can crispy fry all this spam! Thinly sliced - with a little hot sauce and over a bed of cajun rice. Then I wouldn't mind it so much.

Aaand we just got another one.

I trust your judgement, Pat. If you think it will cut down on that crap then I am on board. How many other users here would be in favor of banning IP's from India?

I've sold stuff all over the world but not once to India so it wouldn't hurt my feelings.

lol, lets see how he tolerates it on his precious gaming site.

One spam is not part of doing business, unless you are too damned lazy to fight it.

1. I made this account with a bogus email? So spammers dont even need legit emails to post here. This is easy......

2. No activation was needed, so again super fast to make account and post.

They have lots of ways to protect yourself from spam, but if you do nothing you get nothing. I mean part of owning a comic book store is accepting the fact that you will have theft. So does Steve leave the front door unlocked when its closed, since going to happen anyway why not make it easy on them.

1st rule to a forum, is require legit emails and require activation.

2nd require a venting process so new users cant post for 24-48 hours. Spammers are not patient people they will move on at the slightest hint of a hassle, lots of other lazy forum owners.

Well... It would be a bit hypocritical of a spam company to block spammers.

That said, yes there are ways to stop it. There's general blocking of IPs, but there's also what many message boards have to do now because of spambots and that is to only allow new users after manual review of the accounts. Of course, if anyone actually reviewed the accounts, that would push the "member" number down from 94,000 to something at least one digit short, if not more.

I admin a 10 year old message board. The spambot thing really started a couple years ago. We get 500-600 new account requests a week that need to be deleted. Perhaps letting them through like CCL does keeps them from building that fast, but it also allows for the ridiculous spam we've been seeing every morning.

I wonder if CCL would notice if I quit deleting them.

Probably not until there was a major blow-up by the membership about it.

What? Their presence has increased exponentially since the mass out-cry about outdated software.
Or, it did for a couple weeks anyway...

Yeah, I use Firefox at home as IE is a total piece of garbage - never see any ads here from home and never get any pop-ups.
IE is the only option at work and it's ads galore and the little banner at the top telling me such-and-such pop-up was just blocked.

Since the last Windows update, IE has barely been working right, even. YouTube videos will play sometimes, sometimes they won't. Sometimes pages with Java Applets will just crash. Or other times pictures will be skewed on the page and covering some text. And it's been a little while, it's almost like Microsoft knows most people use FireFox or Chrome now, so they just don't care.

We're still on IE8 at work, no 9, 10, or 11 for us.
