Triggered by the Lucas/Disney thread, I thought I'd take a break from some of the drama recently and solicit your opinion on this. I am admittedly a prude when it comes to addressing canonical material for Star Wars, and even more so for entries in the Star Trek universe; Roddenberry's vision a more robust source for drawing said material, IMO but I'm not here to start a war. There are precious few books from either side that have come recommended to me in my years of fandom, but there were a few. I'd like to fear what I could have been missing... any immediate recommendations for "required reading" from either of these camps?

Timothy Zahn as the author. His three part beginning of the extended universe and the two isse sequel are great.

The Zahn books for sure: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, The Last Command. These are pure Star Wars IMO. He's done a few others as well, but start with these three.

Wraith Squadron series. Both Aaron Allston's X-Wing Squadron (which focused on Wraith Squadron) and Michael Stackpole's X-Wing Squadron (Rogue Squadron) series of novels are fantastic. Aaron Allston has a way of bringing the humor and quick one-liners from the original trilogies into novels like no other Star Wars novelist. Makes for a fun read. I'm pretty sure there is a thread somewhere else on here about the best Expanded Universe novels, but I can't find it.

Just got through reading the first Darth Bane book. It was pretty good. I'd highly recommend. Can't wait to start reading The Rule of Two.

Not to say it was great literature, but I've got a real love/hate relationship with Foster's works, and that was at the pinnacle of his output, before he turned into a publishing whore, said as respectfully as one can without any malice. I give a lot of credit to Foster for turning me onto Alien at a young age, I think I read his adaptation before I even saw the film, IIRC. Didn't he do the adaptation for The Phantom Menace, or was that Terry Brooks? Looks like Zahn is the winner, that will be my first step. Wasn't there a run of books that relate Luke's Jedi training? Or was that a Simonson comic run? Opening that can, Walt Simonson had a super run of Star Wars books when they were published by Marvel, back in the late 70s.

Well I have loads of Star Wars books but I have really enjoyed the Sith books. However it took years to read the Yuuzhan Vong war books

Just remembered another great batch of SW Novels - The Republic Commando novels by Karen Traviss. Great read and it really gives a view into the lives of the clone troopers / RC's and their Mandalorian ways.

My favorites were Splinter of the Mind's Eye and the Darth Bane series. Although, the Legacy of the Force book were good also.

I loved the VONG series. They could not come out fast enough. Also loved the Lost Sith stories, especially since they were mostly free. :) I'm hoping the next Star Wars movies are get into the VONG Invasion, but more than likely, it will be about Hans and Lei courtship, which was a really great book itself. As for the stories so far from the movies, does anyone else think they killed off Padme way too soon with the birth of the twins?
