In observance of Veteran's Day, AMC is having a war movie marathon. This got me thinking of some of my favorite war movies:
Saving Private Ryan
Platoon
Full Metal Jacket
Apocalypse Now
Patton
Inglorious Bastards
The Dirty Dozen
The Deer Hunter
Das Boot
The Hurt Locker
Empire of the Sun

black hawk down
hamburger hill
tears of the sun
band of brothers
thin red line
the green berets
the longest day
we were soldiers.
i get really picky with my war movies. I.E. the hurt locker... worse war movie ever. no one shoots an IED with a M107. NO ONE. and whats worse is that craptacular film won an award. we were soldiers makes me tear up every time.

I'll have to give that one a try. I didn't see it at the time when it came out I think because the previews made it look a little to propogandized. I don't remember exactly what it was, but something about the way they sold it just turned me off.
Another one that I forgot on my list is Joyeux Noel.

I know it's not a movie, but I loved the HBO series Band of Brothers.
And I still want to check out The Pacific.

My top three would be the Vietnam epics Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket; in that order of preference.
Also among personal favourites, but not considered the "best".
Glory
The Great Escape
Das Boot
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence
The Damned (Visconti's)
Zulu
Marvel Universe

Great movie. That final scene with Alec Guiness was a little over the top, though.....

I can't think of a better war movie than Apocalypse Now, and I agree with most of the other movies that have been named here.
What surprises me, though, is the absence of Paths of Glory, a fine picture that lays bare the conflicts of interest between officers' ambitions and their obligations to the soldiers under their command.
Lawrence of Arabia, while possibly classifiable as a biopic, was nevertheless set in the Arabian theater of World War I. I saw it about a month ago on the big screen, and it still inspires awe.
And for those who appreciate silent pictures, The Big Parade is an extraordinary picture that may have been the first mass-market entertainment item to put forth the notion that individual heroism is impossible in modern industrialized warfare. It's worth a look.

Not a fan of war movies but I always enjoyed watching Saving Private Ryan. Platoon I liked but I think that's because I like Willem Dafoe's character.
