dear all,

kindly note that my best ever horror movie is

the exorcist

When a girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two priests to save her daughter.

Storyline

A visiting actress in Washington, D.C., notices dramatic and dangerous changes in the behavior and physical make-up of her 12-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, a young priest at nearby Georgetown University begins to doubt his faith while dealing with his mother's terminal sickness. And, book-ending the story, a frail, elderly priest recognizes the necessity for a show-down with an old demonic enemy.

Are you sure it was the devil? I thought it was a demon. Its been years since I watched it though. So maybe my memory needs a little jogging.Side note.I would say it is the best horror movie of all time.

Yeah, I think it was a demon claiming to be the devil.

From the always reliable wikipedia:

In the 1971 novel The Exorcist and the movie based on the novel, Pazuzu is supposedly one of the evil spirits that possesses the young girl Regan MacNeil. He reappears in the 1977 sequel Exorcist II: The Heretic. In this movie, Pazuzu is both named as the demon antagonist of Regan MacNeil and the unwitting helper of Father Philip Lamont (played by Richard Burton), as he seeks to finally free Regan from his hold. In the end, Father Lamont finally defeats the demons.

I own the novel which the movie was based, very loosely I might add, on.Its a good read. The only similarities between the book and movie are the possesion of a kid (it was a boy in real life), the Catholic church being involved in the exorcism and the scratching of words in the flesh of the victim supposedly from the demon. If I recall correctly the book is titled Possesed.

FYI:
According to the AFI's top 100 American Films list, Frankenstein (1931, Boris Karloff) is the greatest horror film in history.

Personally, it's a toss-up between Day of the Dead (1985 version, not that god-awful 2000s zombie film that has the same name) or the original A Nightmare on Elm Street.

How about Friday the 13 (original) and Dawn of the Dead (original)?

I LOVE the original Dawn the Dead film. That's not to say I think the remake is bad, it was a great movie. But the original I still feel was better. One of my all-time favorite horror movies. But I saw Day of the Dead first, so I think it made a bigger impact on me. It certainly scared the piss out of me as a little kid. And the gore-factor in it is over-the-top, in an awesome way! Plus they do a fantastic job with the captain, you really hate that guy as soon as you get through that first scene with him and it makes for a great pay-off when Bub gets him.

The original Friday the 13th was just meh for me. It was you're average psycho-killer movie and the original didn't even have Jason in it. Some scenes were nearly impossible to see due to the darkness. I don't know if that was done on purpose for effect, but I thought it was dumb whether it was or not. You just see a dark forest and the moon while all these sounds are happening.
