I'm not the oldest person on these Forums, I believe that honor goes to Pat at Comics Castle, but I have been around since the early days of Arcade Games. I plunked many a quarter into Pac-Man, Defender, Centipede, etc. but there were a handful of those games that pulled me in every time. I could play Dig Dug for about 20 minutes on one quarter, I broke the Robotron 2020 machine in the Cardinal Drug Store when I rolled over 999,999 points and I Punched Out Mr. Sandman countless times.

Sure, by today's standards these games are pretty primitive but some of them had that certain appeal that made you want to play again...and again...and again!

Some of my all time faves:

Tempest - controller was a rotating knob and a fire button, how cool is that. Plus frenetic game play

Moon Patrol - basic side scroller but what great music!

Berzerker - why can't I kill the bouncing smiley face?

Karate Champ - for a 2D game this was surprisingly competitive

Joust - still stands up today, great flying mechanics (Hate the pterydactyl)

Battlezone - sure it was just a bunch of lines on a computer screen but the arcade machine itself was pure genius. Driving a tank looking through a periscope! One of the first 3D games

I know I've forgotten a few, can anyone remind me of others?

Closing in on 600 Hero Ratings! Now with more than 16,000 comics listed and thousands more to come! To all of my Fantastic Customers I say, Thank You! Keep watching.

Tempest was awesome - I really loved the version of Tempest2000 that came out on the Jaguar (WAY better than the PlayStation version).
Berserk rocked, but I only ever played it on the 2600...
Joust - oh yeah
Battlezone was awesome, I loved those vector graphics and the sound effects.
I dumped countless quarters into Gauntlet and Centipede.
S.T.U.N. Runner got a lot of my money.
Rampage!
Ivan Stewart's Off Road was a blast, as was Super Sprint.
Crystal Castles and Missile Command both had the HUGE track ball controls and were a blast.
Those were my favorites in my earlier days of arcade hooliganism.

I also put countless hours into River Raid on the 2600.

Had to be guantlet! When guantlet 2 first came out, my brother and his friends talked the arcade owner into letting them rent the game the whole day.

If all you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail.

Soooooo many. I'm still a classic gamer. I own many old consoles I still game on regularly. I'm currently in the middle of Parasite Eve on PS1.

Some favorites of mine:

-Crystalis (NES)
-DuckTales (NES) - No seriously, it's a dang good platformer up there with Mario games.
-King's Field 1-3 (PS1/PS2)
-The Legend of Zelda 1-3 (NES/SNES)
-Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx-CD)
-Neverwinter Nights (PC)
-Resident Evil 1-3 & Code Veronica (PS1/Dreamcast)
-Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3 & Knuckles (Genesis)
-Super Mario Bros. 1-3 & Super Mario World (NES/SNES)
-Super Metroid (SNES)

How is Parasite Eve? I've been thinking about getting it on the PSN for a couple weeks now.

If I had back every quarter that I slammed into Gauntlet I could have easily bought my own machine. The best time I ever had playing it was when I worked at Kings Dominion as a teenager. They would close the park down twice a year and have an employees party. Everything free: Rides, Food, Games - EVERYTHING! All of the video games had unlimited credits and there was a swarm around the Gauntlet machine. We always had the full complement of four characters and people would drop out and someone would jump in and take their place. Almost a precursor to today's on-line collaborative games. We must have gone three or four-hundred levels.

Great RPG with action elements in the battle system, a crazy sci-fi story, with the backdrop of a cop detective elements to it set in New York City. One of the biggest selling points of the game, the jaw-dropping graphics (for the time), really isn't a selling point today, though.

Cool. I think I'll pick it up next week. As for classics, I started video gaming in the 90's with an N64 and PS1, so my list is:

-Super Mario 64
-Banjo-Kazooie
-Crash Bandicoot series
-Pokemon (Red Version)
-Tomb Raider
-Goldeneye (N64)

definitely classics!

Donkey Kong Country sure ate up a lot of my time on the old SNES.

And of course Nate's mention of Super Metroid can't be ignored - one of the best games EVER.

Some other quarter munchers that devoured my paychecks - Mortal Kombat II and MK3.

Yeah the first Tomb Raider was one of my favorite games back in the day, not to mention that it was my first game ever. But arcade cabinets wise I grew up on a steady diet of Time Crisis...pure 90's Big Grin

Absolutely LOVED Time Crisis! Anytime I walked into a random Arcade and saw a TC cabinet I would quickly zero in!

Wow, a lot of love for Tomb Raider. I'm surprised. I found the game to be big, empty, and boring.

Are you talking about Lara Croft's boobs, brain or personality?
