The dreaded "Other" category mopped up again. X-books being the popular items under this category though (X-Factor, New Mutants, Weapon X...) Vote for this weeks top Marvel read above. Give us some details on your reads below.

Deadpool #899This was the first issue of Deadpool's new team-up arc. It features Fred van Lente on words and relative unkown Dalibor Talajic with the art. The book follows the classic team-up archetype, making it both a self contained and light read. There were some alright moments in this book, but all in all I'd have to say that it was a somewhat mediocre read. Two classic villains entrap Hercules and Deadpool, using a series of telepathic commands to create misdirection within our tow heroes. Hopefully these get a little better. Over the years I've dropped and picked up Deadpool a number of times in it's various incarnations. It is starting to feel like drop time again with the this team-up vibe. 6/10

Psylocke #1 (of 4)Psylocke has always been the X-character whose history I found the most confusing. Switching bodies, alive, dead, gone for long periods of time and then just showing up again. I've never really understood this character. This book is your typical set-up issue for a short series based on revenge. It was okay. As cliche as it may be, I love the fact that Wolverine stowed away with Psylocke to Japan. Aa little slow, but we'll see where this series goes. The back of the book featured a seperate story called "X-Men: A Girl Called Hope (Part One). It focused on the unique relationship between Hope and Cable. And I'll be honest, I have no idea what the point of this story is... 6.5/10

Astonishing X-Men was pretty good for a change. The last arc was notoriously late and that didn't help make sense of Warren Ellis and his sci-fi themed stories. Anyway this one is a little easier to grasp as the X-Men are attacked by organic sentinels that shoot Brood aliens. It sounds fun and it looked even better in the comic. I thought the fight between Logan and the Brood was captured perfectly. I think Ellis has a weird way of writing Beast and his voice just seems different from what I'm used to I guess. A good issue worth a look.
When I heard Psylocke would be returning to Uncanny and actually get some face time I was excited. It's well known her history is a garbled mess and I still don't know what the hell happened to her. But I hope this mini is the start of a fresh slate for Betsy. The first issue was a good start and will hopefully set the stage for more Psylocke across the X-Men universe. I'm confident this mini will be good to as Chris Yost is writing it and Harvey Tolibao did a great job with the pencils. I do wonder if she can hold her own solo title. Not many X-Men male or female characters can though. I guess they work better as a team.

X-Men Origins: IcemanAnother installement in the X-Origins series. This lastest one-shot focuses on the early years of Bobby Drake and his reqruitment on to the X-men. The story was predictable and offered no new insight into the character. The art however was very interesting. Phil Noto handled all of the artistic duties, and I was really impressed with his style. His muted colours and simple lines suited the story well. All in all, I think they could have been more creative with Iceman`s origins. 6/10

Thanks, Ian, for reviewing some of these. I was waffling on getting Psylocke and the Iceman origin book. I really don't like Psylocke, but I was thinking about getting it because of the Hope & Cable back up. And the origin books haven't really added anything to the characters, and while I like Iceman (shhhh...don't tell Andy), unless there was something revelatory about him, I won't waste my money.

Astonishing X-Men #32I get the same feeling reading this series as did reading Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men. And let me just be clear, I hate Grant Morrison! It seems to me that Ellis; like Morrison, doesn't like the X-universe the way that it is, and has just decided to rewrite it as he sees fit. Is this an alternative universe or is this 616? Emma doesn't have a sliver of the Void stuck in her skull in the Astonishing Universe? Also, like Morrison, it seems to me that someone has given Ellis complete artistic liscence to write characters however he sees fit. For instance, what is up with Ellis' constantly horny Beast? I really don't want to read that stuff...at all! I did enjoy the art, but after further consideration, I think it was Andy Lanning's inking that really pushed Jimenez's art to the next level. This was an okay read, and it did inspire me to do a little research Cruithne ("Earth's second moon") which is actually very cool! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3753_Cruithne6.5/10

I think this is the best thing about these review forums. I wish more people would leave them. I don't venture outside of my reads much and I think I would more if I knew more.

I'm hoping the Deathlok book is a good read. I've liked the character for a while now and Roxxon has been mentioned in many books in the past 2 years as well so here's hoping the story pans out and Deathlok isn't thrown back into comic obscurity. They quoted me!

I went with other. But then I never seem to agree with the majority on Marvel books. I'm just so not an X-junkie like most of you guys. Anyways, I REALLY enjoyed The Torch this week. The return of Jim Hammond! Whoo hooo!!! Twice the Torch Johnny could ever hope to be. The art is fantastic, the villains are classic, and I love the whole throwback style of it all. And next issue: Sub-Mariner vs. The Torch! Whoo Hoo times two! -Nate-

X-MEN VS AGENTS OF ATLAS #2 (OF 2)I think that two issue mini series are really hard to pull off. They almost have to be series who's sole purpose is to clarify some detail from another arc. To take a story cold and start it, explain it and end it in two issues is pretty tricky. This mini was no exception. It was mediocre. Matching the team dynamics of the X-Men versus the Agents of Atlas was interesting, but in the end it came across only as a thinly veiled reason to have the X-Men throw down with the AoA. The story broke into a smaller, secondary story at the back of the book. This involved Venus and the actual Greek God she took her namesake from. It was okay, but in all honesty, I find her the least interesting character on the team. 6.5/10

DOCTOR VOODOO AVENGER OF SUPERNATURAL #2I was just about to lose all hope for my whole stack of books this week when I read Doctor Voodoo. Wow, this was a great read! Fantastic art and a brilliant setting. There was a guest appearnace by the Son of Satan. This book had it all. I loved the alternate dimension Voodoo was trapped in thanks to Dr. Doom. This was easily my read of the week! 9/10

I thought Immortal Weapons was a huge improvement in all areas since the Bride of Nine Spiders story. It gave a lot of insight into the Tigers Beautiful Daughter city and why she represented her city. I really liked the twist in the story and it turned out to be a really satisfying read. It's too bad we didn't get more time for these characters to be used in Immortal Iron Fist. I really do love that book and the characters that have been involved. Next up Prince of Orphans!

This week was big on numbers, but a little short on quality- pretty much all around.
My favorite of the week, though was Assault on New Olympus. Another great mock of Spider-man's Mephisto BS- and a solid setup to the next Hercules arc. Strange tales was pretty good (again) but one of the stories was utterly incomprehensible to me. Psylocke and X-Men Origins: Iceman were both decent, but not spectacular. Astonishing X-Men picked up a lot this week, but being set in the X-Men's recent past really hurts the storytelling. Deadpool Team up with Hercules delivered pretty well- we'll see how long this book lasts, though. Torch was solid (finally) and the best part continues to be the Thinker, though I look forward to Namor's upcoming part. The conclusion of HoM: Masters of Evil was well done, though I can't really say the same for Iron Man: Armor Wars. HoM had a surprise ending with nice character development, but the Iron Man tale was lacking for me- suffering the same problem as Astonishing. Black Widow: Deadly Origin is off to a solid start, but I kinda wish I would have waited for the trade on this one. Reborn had a predictable surprise and is plodding along until the inevitable return of Steve Rogers.

Just got around to reading my books from this week.I must say that all the Marvel books I got were let downs. Amazing Spider-Man was meh Deathlok issue 1 was a complete set up issue.Loved the art and Peterson's cover art was amazing.I'm sure the trade will read much better. Reborn I'm still waiting to be impressed with. This was a storyline I was looking forward to and I have to admit that so far I am really disappointed with it.

I got Astonishing from last week. The art was great. I really enjoy Jimenez. But, did anyone else notice that this plot and Necrosha are very similar? Someone is resurrecting dead mutants (albeit in a different way) to get at the X-Men? Of course, this plot device is nothing new at all, as it's being using by DC right now too, but c'mon, in two different X-books? Why couldn't they just hold off on this storyline? Maybe if the Ghost Box arc wasn't so drawn out, they could have done this and it wouldn't have seemed so bad. Also, with Cable fighting future Broods in his book, Ellis' use of the Brood here seemed contrived too. It's like he was taking the other X-books and cherry-picking ideas. Granted, he might have come up with this story before the others, but the timing is just way off. Add to the fact that this is obviously not current 616 continuity (pre-Utopia), and it all just feels weird.

Other got my vote. As Cape said, Doctor Voodoo was pretty good and shows the most promise. I also agree with his assessment about 2 issue mini's(X-men vs. Agents of Atlas). You've got to go 3-4 minimum to really show something worth reading, otherwise it doesn't stick in your mind for more than a week.
