I'm not sure what I want to write. I just know that I do want to write something.
Usually "events" and "cross-overs" are where I drop a series. I'm an old school collector. I like my series self contained. If I don't buy the big event, I don't want it "infecting" my books. Every issue could be someone's first sort of mentality. I miss narratives that are easy to follow...no ".1" to pick up...no recap page to bring me up to speed.
And then I read Avengers #9. The recap page was almost unnecessary. The story that unfolded between Thor and Hecla was so nuanced and layered and sweet and complicated. The world building through Hecla's narrative. The poignant backstory. The doubt. The purpose. The quest.
I teared up.
This is a story about two heroes. It is everything I want my comics to be. It is everything I need my comics to be. It's an issue I'll share with my children and my students.
