A New Direction For A Classic Franchise! (A Review of Turok: The Empty Souls #1)

If you were a fan of the original GOLD KEY "Son of Stone" comic or even of the later VALIANT incarnation, then you MIGHT not enjoy the approach ACCLAIM took in relaunching the TUROK title back in the 90's. However, I rather enjoyed it and found it to be a rather fresh take that stood on its' own.

Joshua Fireseed is a college student that has it all. He's good looking, talented and quite the stud with the ladies. But what Joshua doesn't know is his world is about to get a lot stranger when he goes home to visit his dying Uncle. Turns out his family (and his entire lineage), generation after generation, has been charged with the task of protecting the Earth from an interstellar invasion. Using tools and weapons given to him by his Uncle (like the Hawking Sight and the "Light Burden"), Joshua is forced into the role of his generation's "Turok".

The comic also makes the attempt to capture the feel of the original Turok by incorporating one of Joshua's ancestors, Tal'Set (aka "The Valiant One", into the new Valiant/Acclaim Universe. The character also gained some fame outside of the comic universe when he was used as the main playable character in the 1st person video game shooter TUROK 2: SEEDS OF EVIL, and also became the subject of action figures and books. Heck, Joshua even made the cover of NINTENDO POWER! But I digress...

The artwork and story are pretty good and I hesitate to say it's JAMES ROBINSON STARMAN or even STAN LEE SPIDER-MAN good, but the family/lineage angle is similar to the SPIDER-MAN and STARMAN idea. It's a book that you don't have to be familiar with any of the Turok incarnations to enjoy. It's a decent coming-of-age story that is a strong lesson on responsibility.
