A Whole Lot of Nothingness

With one issue left in this series, I could be wrong here, but I think the readers are in for some disappointment.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say that Andy Diggle and the Marvel execs came up with a really good introduction to this story and have an idea for the ending but had NOOOOOOOO clue what to do in the middle! I'm confident in saying this because all 3 of the "meat between the buns" issues have come out, and none of them have furthered the storyline a lick. I suppose I should be careful, because maybe that is the current formula for comic writing (strong beginning and ending with filler middles), but for me, personally, I just see that as bad writing!

When reflecting on this Shadowland journey, Kevin Smith's Clerks II comes to mind. There is a particular scene where Randall is making fun of Lord of Rings. He insinuates that the entire trilogy consists of the Hobbits walking; nothing more, just walking with odd interruption in between. While I disagree with that analogy, I do believe it fits well here. for three issues, all we have seen is Iron Fist and his merry gang breaking into Daredevil's fortress. Diggle throws a bunch of inconsequential events in to distract us, but ultimately this is what happened for three issues.

I guess part of my let down has to do with the fact that aside from Bullseye being killed, nothing has been a suprise. For instance, Diggle leaves the reader with a last page that shows Daredevil in a possessed craze stating, "There is no Murdock. Only the Beast!" This is left as though it is a giant reveal. Was I the only one who knew Daredevil was possessed? Haven't they been saying that all along?

So if you are someone who is thinking of going out and picking up this series once it is done, do your wallet a favour and just pick up issue 1 and 5. Trust me, they will tell you everything you need to know to understand the story.

Oh, and buy the variant covers because Cassaday's covers are laughable.

Interesting comment about the LOTR reference. This also happened in Thanos Imperative #5.
