I was flipping through my comic book stack for something to read and review when I came across my copy of STAR WARS #1 by Marvel Comics. While everyone is gearing up for the new AVENGERS movie (myself included), I thought it would be fun to look at the book that sold like crazy a couple months ago now that it's back under the Disney/Marvel fold.
First off, the book has the cinematic FEEL of a STAR WARS movie. The story even opens with scrolling credits and the familiar "A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away" gag. We find that ALLLLL of the EXPANDED UNIVERSE, NOVELS, SHORT STORIES and other peeks inside the Star Wars universe are basically set aside for a basic tale of EMPIRE vs REBELLION with the main characters everyone knows and loves:
Luke Skywalker (More adventurer than Jedi, he's just scratching the surface of the FORCE.)
Han Solo (Still the charming rogue, he's still got a Bounty on his head and he's trying to help the Rebellion if he can.)
Princess Leia (Plucky as ever. The daring brains of a mission unafraid to get her hands dirty.)
There's Chewbacca. There's Darth Vader. There's C3PO. There's the Falcon. Yep, THIS is the STAR WARS I remember, when Lucas' universe was fresh right after EPISODE IV and we all didn't know Vader is Luke's (SPOILER ALERT).
It's just a band of rebel scum vs a tyrannical force of evil. That's all you need to know.
Jason Aaron and John Cassaday really make this book awesome. There's nothing inside these pages that will help you solve world hunger or fix the California Water Shortage. It's just visually a fun book and an entertaining read...especially if you're a fan of the original Trilogy.
