Giving Alex Ross the writing chores for this book reminded me of why Michael Jordan didn't play baseball long.
Lookit, I
LIKE Alex Ross. He's one helluvan artist, and seriously, back in the day was one of the most likable guys at the cons you'd meet. But
WHY oh WHY did we think he was good enough to write this book? Did anyone read the commentary in the back of the book? He did the artwork
FIRST and
THEN went back and wrote the dialog around it.
Isn't that how America's "
POWER RANGERS" live-action TV shows work? And I don't know when the last time you tried to watch one of THOSE was...
What sold me on this book, was the artwork. It wasn't until after I got home and saw the credits that I said, "Hmm, seriously?" and then I read the book. I thought the artwork in this book was truly some of his finest - but did anyone have Mark Waid's number handy for writing this one? Ross's writing DID have it's moments in fairness. Love the scene with Superman and Norman. That was good writing, almost to a point that you'd think that Ross had that idea floating in his mind for a while.
Still, I have to slap DC on the hand on this one. Man, you pulled the wool over my eyes on this one, wrapping a so-so book in a gleaming, golden cover.
Can anyone say "Batman: R.I.P?"
