It seems like ages ago it was announced that Harris Comics has sold Vampirella to Dynamite. There was the instant question of "So what is this actually going to do for Vampirella"?
I was one of those people asking this question not because I was a die hard fan of Vampirella (I has a basic knowledge of who she is from some bookstore clearance shelf trades)but because it was Dynamite that had landed this character. A company that had yet to steer me wrong with it came to comics and seemed to try and walk that line between keeping old schools fans happy yet at the same time making their books easily digestible to new fans.
With Vampirella they have done just that but with IMO baby steps. The first salvo offers action and a bit of back story for new readers. You clearly get that she is a woman with a mission and that she is a woman at war against her own kind. She has no qualms about taking out any one that will prey on the weak. While this first issue will not shake the foundations it is not a story that you can say will let you down. It hints that there are great things to come from issue #2 and at the end adds just that hint of mystery that will make you want to come back just to see what the hell that thing is that comes out of that blond ladies hand (honestly go read it for yourself I am not going to do the work for you)?
You also get a nice little back up story by Jeph Loeb that while it may not win an award it is interesting in its own way.
Vampirella is one of those wait and see books for me right now as I get the impression this is all building to something and you will will either love it or shrug your shoulders. Personally I am looking forward to seeing where Dynamite takes this character as I mentioned earlier they have yet to let me down.
