Let me start off by saying that no one started reading this story thinking that Bruce Wayne would remain a fugitive and that he would only have the personas of Batman and Matches Malone from now on. We all read comics and know that reversals of fortune such as these are merely temporary.
Here's the gist of the story. One of Bruce Wayne's former lovers, Vesper Fairchild (who I loved as a character by the way), is found brutally murdered in Wayne Manor. She was killed with martial art precision that could only be pulled off by very few people on Earth. And supposedly she was doing a story about Batman's true identity (apparently she figured out who the Dark Knight really is).
This storyline has some of the old familiar tropes. Bruce pushes all his allies away and then comes to realize that he needs his family beside him and they all return. What makes this story so appealing is that the mystery has to be solved without the help of the World's Greatest Detective because he seems content to let his family name go down the toilet.
We watch Nightwing, Robin, Oracle, Batgirl and others try to save him from himself. And they're not all convinced of his innocence. It's definitely a wild ride. Pick up the issue and see where that ride takes you.
