I'm one of those guys who will be at my LCS for the Launch Party of SECRET WARS. I was just a kid when the original came out and spent many trips to K-MART and DOLLAR GENERAL trying to hunt down the SECRET WARS action figures. So yeah. To say I'm slightly stoked about the new crossover that will supposedly launch MARVEL into a new age is an understatement.
Then I saw that TOYS R US was offering a promotional issue of SECRET WARS: ARMOR WARS #1/2 if you came in and spent some money with them! I rushed to TRU and did just that. I secured my copy and headed home.
Written by JAMES ROBINSON, (who I love despite being hit or miss over the years) and drawn by MARK BAGLEY, ARMOR WARS #1/2 was a terribly confusing, poorly executed issue to drop in the laps of fans leading INTO Secret Wars...especially if you don't know all the characters like me. All I know is that James "Rhodey" Rhodes is THOR, and every main character in this issue has a suit of armor, right down to "Spyder-Man."
Oh and Arno Stark is in it. It's a futuristic issue.
This book is worse than walking into a theatre after the credits have started. This is a bit like walking in 20 minutes before the movie's over.
I'm really happy to own this book, because I'm a stickler for comic book promotions and I'm always excited to see retailers offering free comic books to customers on any level. However, besides owning a few pieces of paper held together by staples, I just don't see the reasoning behind this particular issue's existence. I don't think there's a line of "ARMOR WARS" action figures coming...although I could be wrong. That would make sense. But beyond that, I'm sorry. I'm scratching my head. I'll still be at the Launch Party, but I probably won't admit that I rushed to Toys R Us just for this book.
