Abnett and Lanning are truly the heirs of Jim Starlin’s cosmic vision. They understand that great concepts can only be explored through the point of view of individual’s struggle with their inner turmoil. From this emerges the conflict that moves the story forward and fashions a new reality that speaks to us as something worthy of our attention.
The gorgeous artwork and coherent story telling speaks of a love for the material and the shared universe within what is Marvel’s complex and ever changing boundaries; a playground for the imagination, but also a potential pitfall for superficial explorations. Abnett and Lanning understand this pitfall well and have navigated through Annihilation and now the Guardians of the Universe. They are so in tuned with the potentials inherent in this universe and have mastered it so well that it is a pleasure to witness the story unfold and reveal the unexpected.
Having just completed Guardians of the Galaxy: Quest for the Shield, I can appreciate the connections that Major Vance and Starhawk bring to the new Guardians of the Universe series for they open up a dual track for future development as we explore their significance and the new tensions they bring.
