Okay, so I was high on issue #7. Just the mere mention of Nightcrawler and Phoenix coming to assist Wolverine in his battle for his soul sent me screaming through the streets like a school girl. I knew issue #8 would have a tough time following up on the expectations from the previous chapter. Ultimately though, it wasn't too bad. Sure, Jason Aaron chickened out in the end but it was entertaining enough to get a look inside Wolverine's deepest secrets.
One of the most interesting features of this book has to be the multitude of doors inside Wolverine's psyche. While the X-girls are battling inside of Logan's mind, they stumble across a series of doors which hold deep secrets. Some of the doors and the girls' reactions to them are hilarious. Things like, "Sexual Fantasies", "X-Men I've Had Sex With" and "How I Cheat At Cards" draw some pretty classic reactions from the X-Ladies. Well written on the part of Jason Aaron.
I will be honest with you though, Dr. Nemesis hits the nail on the head when he says, "...get himself mind controlled for the 500'th time now...". The mind control themes involving Wolverine are past getting tired. We really need to put this idea to bed for say, the next 20 years!
Now that the demons have been excised, I hope we can get back to some old school Wolverine. The next story arc looks to involve "Revenge". So I hope that it sees Wolverine on a solo mission to just take a bunch of people out. Hopefully he falls off the radar a little to take care of some personal business.
When all was said and done, this wasn't too bad an issue. I am not a fan of Acuna's art and really wish I would have purchased the Variant cover instead of the Jae Lee cover. But, it was nice to the players involved in this issue come to aid of the old Canucklehead. Wolverine haters will find all the flaws with this story. X-fans will see the glimmer of hope.
