DC New 52 Review: Green Lantern Corps #2

From the DCU Review:

Immediately following the events of last issue, the Lanterns have discovered the Lanterns of Sector 3599 impaled on a planet that was once a great ocean world and is now a dry and dead, it's inhabitants murdered in an act of genocide. Tracking the energy source responsbile, the Lanterns are led to another planet under assault by a mini black hole that's sucking in all the trees.

Some mysterious super-villain is ripping the natural resources from other worlds to repair their own seemingly dead planet. I think that's a pretty awesome concept. I supsect there's more to this villain and his followers as well. Why collect the severed fingers of Green Lanterns? I can't imagine they are simply trophies. It seems like a seed is planted that the GL Corps may have been responsible for whatever happened to this villains planet.

John Stewart asks some of the enprisoned enemies, "What has the Corps done to you?"

"What hasn't it done?" replies the evil dude.

Yeah, there's definitely more to this story, and that makes the reveal of their mysterious leader all the more suspenseful.

And what about the power batteries these villains seem to have on their home planet? Are they batteries stolen from the Corps or has this villain learned to channel will power on its own? Considering their green energy swords and near-inulnerability to the Lanterns' rings, it defiintely suggests they are using the Lanterns' own weapon against them. In a battle of willpower, however, they picked the wrong Lanterns to mess with. An 'evil' group of 'Lanterns' is another interesting concept, so major points to Tomasi for creating a nifty new nemesis.

On the downside, this issue doesn't bring the same level of character that the first issue did. Instead of a story about Guy Gardner and John Stewart struggling with their ordinary lives, we are thrown into nonstop action. On that level, this issue is very enjoyable, but it lacks the depth of the first issue. Isamot -- a character I'm not really familiar with -- sacrificing himself doesn't resonate on any emotional level, because he is a stock character at this point. When I saw he survived I was excited, not because I am attached to the character, but because it was refreshing to see a non-violent, non-lethal outcome... then he gets his limbs cut off and the shock fest continues, which is disappointing. Tomasi is trying to use gore to make the reader care instead of actual character development for all these extras he keeps killing. That's a big fail, although the ring on Isamot's tongue was funny in a dark humor way. Since he's a lizard, maybe he'll regenerate his limbs to fight another day.
