About Daredevil (1964)

Matt Murdock lives a hard life. As a boy, his mother has already died, and he lives a humble existence with his father, an over-the-hill boxer. Matt saves the life of a man in the street by pushing him out of the way of an oncoming hazardous waste truck. The truck crashes, spilling radioactive waste in Matt's eyes, blinding him, but augmenting his other senses. Finding himself more capable than ever, he trains his body and attempts feats of derring-do that no person with vision would dare. He dons a costume that matches his outlook, as Daredevil, the Man Without Fear. Daredevil's first job is to avenge the murder of his father by a mobster trying to fix a boxing match. Brilliant and disciplined, Matt earns a law degree and practices in the courtroom by day, but by night, he brings on a special brand of justice for the criminals that can't be reached by our legal system.

Published by Marvel Comics Group, Volume 1 was published continuously from issue #1 to issue #380 (Oct 1998), before changing to Volume 2, which ran from issue #1 (Nov 1998) to issue #119 (Aug 2009). Marvel switched back to the original numbering for the Oct 2009 issue, #500, collected here under Volume 1, and continues publication as of this writing under this numbering.

This pattern of publication where the title was rebooted, then returned to its original numbering system was used by Marvel in most of its major titles, including Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Thor, Daredevil, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and Iron Man.

The indicia's title is simply 'Daredevil', however, the title on the cover started its life as 'Here Comes... Daredevil, The Man Without Fear!' and would run for 91 issues with variants on this verbiage before a brief run as 'Daredevil and the Black Widow' for issue #'s 92 - 107.

Although always distributed under the Marvel Comics Group imprint, the Publisher of record in the indicia has changed several times in its history:

Issue #'s 1 - 46: Olympia Publishers

Issue #'s 47 & 48: Perfect Film & Chemical

Issue #'s 49 - 97: Magazine Management

Issue #'s 98 - Current: Marvel Comics Group

The early publishers are a vestige of the transition from Martin Goodman's ownership as the modern-day Marvel Comics arose from its Golden Age roots in Timely / Atlas.
