One of the best characterized evil doers in DC comics is Kirby’s Darkseid. He began in Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olson #134 and continues to intrigue comic readers. There are qualities in Darkseid that makes us care for him even when he is planning to conquer the worlds in our cosmos.
The cry of Darkseid Lives will be heard again through the pages of DC and shake the DC Universe in the many media that now encompass comics of our age. With Darkseid (Villains) , part of the New Year’s Evil story arc, we encounter all the most important evil characters that populate Apokolips as they fight for Darkseid’s legacy and kingdom, only to be reminded that there is no one better to bring New Genesis and earth to its knees than Darkseid. Published in 1998, it sets the return of the New Gods and other characters from Kirby’s Fourth World, now in the hands of Byrne, Grant and Kryssing. The cover art and color in the hands of Jason Pearson.
Byrne does a great job imitating the style of Jack Kirby and improving on it. This issue deserves a high ranking but for the art which can not be imitated by anyone; the fluidity of the panels and the exiting color selections of the original Fourth World Saga stand as a monument of Kirby’s artistic work.
