The X-Men have been in a lot of tight spots over the years, but I can honestly say that it has been a long time since I felt the situation was this hopeless. Kyle and Yost have done a superb job in capturing the sense of desperation around the current threat of Bastion and his super-sentinels. As bizarre as it may sound, I am genuinely worried about my favourite mutants. And that my friends, is the sign of good writing!
With San Francisco encased in a giant energy sphere, the mutants (along with the local residents) find themselves trapped and at the mercy of 170 000 NIMROD sentinels from the future. Bastion tactfully picked off all of the teleporters, leaving the rest of the team trapped within this sphere. Like shooting fish in a barrel!
After suffering heavy losses at the hands of a measly NIMROD scouting party, Scott decides he has to do something drastic. And it just wouldn't be drastic unless it involved X-Force. Knowing that he only has one "jump" left in his mechanically enhanced arm, Cable and X-Force time travel to the future to try and cut the NIMRODS off at their source. After they have left, Scott informs everyone that there is no way they will be able to get back.
Mike Choi's art is a little difficult to follow at times, especially being some of the characters are difficult to recognize unless somebody mentions their name. But the story was so good, I was able to overlook that. I love the fact that Namor was front and centre, pounding NIMRODs all over the place.
So after the smoke settled and the wounded were moved to safety, I'd have to say that this was one hell of a read!
