Marvel/Soleil’s Tales of the Dragon Guard: Into the Veil Book 1: Brisken continues the adventures of the army of the Dragon Guard as they confront the evil product of Dragons in their world. The story relates an epic confrontation between the Dragon Guard and the Aberrants, by product of Dragon contact with humans. Underlying this confrontation is the royal intrigue to emasculate the Dragon Guard as a force in the Empire. The virgin warriors are immune to the Dragon influence, thus they have become a power within the Empire; the only force capable of confronting Dragons and defeating them.
Even though this is one of the most expensive comics around, I believe it’s worth every penny. The art is dynamic and the colors excel with every splash of blood ripping from the panels. The story is deep like a novel, with multiple layers depicting characterization and story telling. There is a sensibility in European comics that is not present in traditional American comics which I find refreshing. I have reviewed other comics from Soleil and have come to the same conclusion. This sensibility will hopefully influence traditional comics in the future.
