I would like to suggest a system update where instead of listing Direct Edition/Direct Sales or Newsstand Edition as a variant, there be a checkbox to indicate which one it is (Perhaps default to Direct Edition, and check the box if it's Newsstand Edition, with any issues that predate any such distinction being defaulted to Direct Edition).

My next idea - directly related to this one - would be more difficult to implement, but would be of great help to many collectors: Change the cover image based on whether the box is checked or not. If it's checked, one image shows up. If it isn't the alternate image shows. This would be difficult to program, I'm sure, but not impossible, as the Adult Cover checkbox already changes the cover image. It would just require an alternate image be uploaded instead of using a stock image.

Naturally, it would also require that the cover price be confirmed for both versions, but I'm sure that could be programmed into the system as well.

This would avoid the issue of having EVERY modern issue having at least 1 variant, keeping things nice and organized as it is, and it would make a lot of us collectors very happy.

I'd love to hear peoples' thoughts on this, as well as any other suggestions that might help integrate Direct vs Newsstand in a way that would make everyone happy.

I've been suggesting this idea in the forums for years as a happy compromise. My version, though, would default the setting to "NS" (not specified), so stores that already have books listed could opt-out of differentiating them if they wish. No one ever responded to my idea. Even at the beginning of the year, when Joe floated the idea in the forums that he would reconsider his "no newsstand" mandate, I sent him a PM with the idea. Now that CCL is full steam ahead on adding newsstands as seperate variants, it's unlikely they will backtrack to a different idea.

Nice to know that great minds think alike, though!

I'm with Corey on this. I did want some kind of way to show upfront if a comic was newsstand or direct. Doesn't really matter that much anymore as newsstand editions are now up for being added as a variant.

It will take a while for newsstand variants to be added however. A lot of the comics I have listed and are in my inventory to be listed are newsstand. I put a comment in the Item's Market Notes to designate if they are NS. However, I'm not doing a lot of CR's to add them. The last box I just listed had about 150 newsstand editions in it. If I did a CR for every single one of those it would take forever. Both putting in the CR'c and waiting for them to be approved. Neither of which takes a long time individually but massively it does. Hate to say it but unfortunately that's how it is.
