May the Fourth Be With You!
Huge fan of Star Wars. My Aunt took me to see Episode IV (which honestly made my 8 year old self think that I had missed something) and I was instantly hooked. Now, nearly 50 years later, I am still hooked! I was always fascinated by the droids. They are quite ubiquitous appearing as main characters, secondary characters and even just plain background. Coming in all shapes and sizes with a variety of purposes these robots are an essential part of the entire mythos.
Here I present to you my TOP 5 droids, in no particular order. These
are the droids you are looking for! Just a handful but ones that I feel are pretty darn interesting.
Please note the glaring omission of a certain whiny, golden protocol droid. If you have been around for a while then you know my stance on that one but if not then allow me to elaborate. That bumbling know-it-all is a negative nelly that's either constantly giving the odds of failure, butting into the Han and Leia relationship or getting himself into some very fine mess that he needs rescuing from. I mean, he was built by Darth Vader for crying out loud so what would you expect? OK, I'm done. I apologize for my outburst. Moving on!
Scorpenek annihilator droidWow, this is one bad mamma jamma droid! Massive firepower and nigh impregnable shields make this a tough nut to crack. Took 2 Mandolorians and a Rancor Beast plus a bunch of cannon fodder to defeat.
R2-D2Now here is a droid to be admired! Despite not speaking a single word of dialogue this spunky astromech easily conveys his thoughts to it's human companions. Intuitive enough to be able to figure out how to bypass the main power drive of Queen Amidala's ship, feisty enough to tangle with the oldest living Jedi over a flashlight and adept enough to shut down the trash compactors all across a moon sized death dealing machine of war. Probably the second greatest hero in the entire series after Luke.
SM-33I cannot stress to you enough about how surprised I was by how good Skeleton Crew was! Certainly one of the best Star Wars offerings in recent memory. SM-33 was a big part of that. His name is brilliant being a nod to Smee from Peter Pan. Perfect. Also loved the bilge rat living in his eye socket! "Can't say I remember no At Attin." Amazing.
K-2SOYou had me at Alan Tudyk. If I were to do a Top 5 Star Wars movies then Rogue One would definitely be there. I love K's sardonic and blunt speech pattern. "Cassian doesn't like you. I don't like you, either." His Alamo like last stand was one of the best in cinematic history.
IG-11Man it was awesome seeing an IG droid in action! I mean, IG-88 was one of my favorite of the bounty hunters in ESB but let's be honest, he really didn't do anything. This version was pretty dang cool. Even after being mostly destroyed and turned into battle armor for Grogu he was pretty cool. Maybe even more so! (Sorry for no spoiler alert but if you haven't seen it by now you probably aren't reading this anywway.)

So that's it. Do you agree with my choices or do you think I'm as crazy as a Cingulon? Let me know and if there is a droid you like that I missed please elaborate!
I've got a good feeling about this!
