I don't know why I'm on such a kick with these Wolverine trades. Probably just a want for some old compressed super-hero stories. The first story was an eight page Wolverine series preview from Marvel Age Annual #4 by Claremont and Buscema. An interesting primer to the ongoing.
The big chunk of this trade was 'Black Shadow! White Shadow!' by Marv Wolfman and John Buscema. I still find Buscema's art on these issues overly simplistic and at time ugly but this actually seemed to get better as it went on. The story itself wasn't anything special - a schizophrenic mutant manifests two beings, one white, one black, that destroy whole towns in Hong Kong and only Wolverine can stop them. Dumb, but fun reading.
The last part of this story collects MCP #48-50 (the first story was #38-47) and is written and drawn by Erik Larsen. Holy art change, Batman! We go from a 60s feel to the pop of the 90s. Which was nicely refreshing, because, you know, I like detail. Larsen's story was more a focus on Spider-Man and his reflection on all the coincidents of the reveals that EVERYONE he knows is someone evil. Pretty amusing from that stand point. Wolverine is definitely second string in this though. And I feel like I should have known who the guy and daughter was at the end that was going into hiding. But I don't. Overall, fun but dumb.
