Good, Even With Land!

Tying in to the "Fear Itself" story arc, the X-Men find themselves having to get involved in stopping one of the hammer wielding "Worthy". I't only fitting that the straw they draw is the Juggernaut. Kieron Gillen says it well when he has Cyclops state, "On a good day Juggernaut was a Thor-class threat himself. Now that he has this hammer, we have idea how powerful he is."

I really found a lot to love in this book. My favourite team, my favourite on again-off again villain, it all just seemed to fit together nicely. It didn't seem to matter that it tied into what has been otherwise a meaningless "event". For goodness sake, it didn't even seem to matter that it was Greg Land taking care of the art responsibilities.

I'm not sure if Land's work is just growing on me or what, but I actually enjoyed his work on this book! (I say while ducking the rotten tomatoes being launched at me by my friends!) I know he steals his poses from popular magazines and tends to recycle the same image over far too often, but I believe he has expanded his repertoire. Dare I say that he might even be able to depict Emma Frost better than anyone! Now don't get me wrong, he still has a long way to go when pencilling action scenes. But I don't know, I didn't hate him on this issue.

One of the things I did appreciate with this issue was how writer Kieron Gillen created a real sense of urgency with Juggernaut approaching San Francisco. The fight scenes were really well scripted and reminded me of the Juggernaut battles of old. The issue had many moments that brought a smile to my face (i.e. When Cyclops knocked out Juggernaut's herald or when Teon took one look at Juggernaut and said to Hope, "Flight?").

There are too many great moments to list without spoiling the whole book. Just trust me when I say, this issue has a real classic Uncanny feel to it.
