First of all, I love Daniel Way as a writer. His work on Wolverine and Deadpool are always high quality and entertaining reads. I believe his work with Bullseye demonstrates his phenomenal ability to truly showcase a villain. Bullseye Greatest Hits and Bullseye vs. The Punisher, both written by Way, elevated Bullseye to one of my top 5 comic book villains.
As "odd" as it maybe to have this simian assassin in his own miniseries I think Way will make it work. He already proved he could make Hit Monkey work as a supporting character in the Deadpool series, so I gave the first issue of this series a try. The artwork wasn't bad, but I normally prefer more realistic images. However, I think the artist did a good job showing Hit Monkey in various emotions(Fear, guilt, and anger). There is a slight Punisher feel to the story, in my opinion. Hit Monkey's family is murdered and he goes on a destructive path of vengeance. He even has a "guide" of sorts to point out his targets. Not exactly Frank Castle and Microchip, but the similarity is there.
I'm not sure Hit Monkey could work as major player in Marvel, but this series certainly has my interest for the present. When the main character cannot actually speak, I think there needs to be a supporting cast with powerful personalities. Well Way brought in a powerful and psychotic personality to strenghen the line-up. We are treated with the arrival of Bullseye to the story which brings some familarity, as well as some eagerness for the first meeting between the two. It set the stage nicely for the next couple of issues and I think some intriguing fight scenes will be forthcoming.
